Inane Posts?

Featured Replies

Sure Bendix.

Is that all you managed to extrapolate from the article that Orwell was a liar, ah well lets discredit his contribution to history then.

You quoted the first two sentences, I wonder if you read the article at all.

Which part pissed you off most? the fact that it was written by Orwell, the claim that the Spanish Civil war was a web of lies,

or that the issues raised were beyond your comprehension?

The title of this thread is 'inane posts' so I guess you managed that part ok.

The title of the thread may be "inane posts" but I found your articly by Orwell very interesting. I know very little about the Spanish Civil War except that the Germans used it as a testing ground for their strategies. It was where they first used the Stuka and the combined armoured/infantry attack. This served them very well right through the second world war until they were beaten primarily on numbers assembled. Interestingly the concept of the lead aircraft attack with armour and infantry was perceived as a worthless tactic by the allies right up to about 1943 when the Americans used similar tactics against the Nazis. The formation is still used to the present day by most modern western armies.

Rob where did you get this article? Is it part of a greater series of writings from Orwell? Thanks for posting it.

I read Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls". Other than that, know little about that war, except Franco led a dictatorship after and like Cawbie says, the Germans used it for a training ground. And there were many atrocities. Good you brought it up, Robski, so folks can remember that, among many other European war crimes, and maybe think, Oh, the Americans aren't so bad, are they?
