mrtoad Posted September 9, 2007 Author Posted September 9, 2007 InIn 2nd place ... Belle Vue, Doncaster (in 1987). Went there during Sunderland's one season in the old 3rd division. Memorable for the win and being the worst football ground I have ever paid to watch a match in. There was a crowd of 2,740 of which the majority were Sunderland fans and that consisted of a cage behind one goal and a collapsing terrace down one touchline. The rest of the ground looked like it had been hit by the German Luftwaffe during WW2. Should be #1. Funny that you should mention Belle Vue (Beautiful View), as it certainly isn't. I have also been to that wonderful ground to watch Exeter City If my memomry serves me right, the owner of the club a few years ago tried to burn the ground down to claim some insurance. He should have tried to be a little more succsful, because between there and Rotheram (Millmore) the county of Yorkshire can proudly bost some of the worst grounds in the country.

I haven't been over St.James for quite a few years (10 probably). But I used to like the old ground, Cow Shed and all. But from all accounts and seeing games on the tele from there a few times it now looks, whilst not exactly the Emirates, a lot more tidy than some of the other grounds that I've been to. Have a gander around for photos of Layer Road , for example. EDIT There's a couple here (taken on a good day) http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/park/yfh...ster_united.htm
bartender100 Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Portman Road, what a dump, can't get parked because its full of tractors, plus the scruffiest supporters in Europe, none of which you can understand when they speak to you
MarkBKK Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Luton Town - Kenilworth RoadPlastic pitch, no away fans and muppet home fans shit location (and I'm from Luton) I was going to say that, but you beat me to it ... (and don't listen to what anyone else says, supporting any team, even dirty Leeds, if preferable to being a scummer.)
chavy Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 That open away end at Forest was a horrible place - always seemed to go there on cold, wet winter afternoons. The open away end was the "bridgeford end", that has now been replaced by an all seater two tear stand. If you look at it though towards one end the stand / roof sloaps down. This is because the locals were moaning about the sun light not getting to their houses. Now our benevolent chairman? has said we are going to have a new ground on the outskirts of the city. A nice new 50,000 capacity construction. That's just what we need when we play Hartlepool in League 1
mickmac Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 I gather the proposed site for the new Forest ground is out at Carlton. Why don't the Forest board go the whole hog and put it in Basford. The locals could then use the away fans for shooting practice.

It's Clifton not Carlton for the new ground (I'll beleive it when I see it) at least then local tealeaves around Clifton will have their work cut out thieving the materials so at least the locals might keep their house's in tact for a year or two. The local snipers are in St Annes & the Meadows, they're far too busy shooting each other to be bothered about our ground

Luton are so irellivant that they even tried to start a rivalry with Plymouth Argyle a few years ago, because even the local clubs to them can't be bothered. The only time Kenilwort road was any good was when they used to play internationla hockey matches there. Edited, I was going to change the spelling of Kemilwort to the correct one, but it is probably better miss spelled.

Yes Belle Vue was pretty grim as well. I've been 2 or 3 times there for one reason or another. The cage at the away end was totally over the top for security. At that time the speedway track was more popular with the natives when asking for directions. I think that guy's name is Richardson who tried to torch the ground for the insurance cash. He must have been a right loser, I mean, who (apart from him) can fail to burn down an old wooden stand even when using gallons of petrol to do it
swindonabroad Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Boltons old ground before the Reebok. Cant remeber the name but the experience was, well, unforgetable. Also the Oxford's old Manor Ground. I may be biased as a Swindon fan but had about 11 different stands, tiny alleyways all around, oh and we always lost.

Never went to Oxford due to it being a shyt hole & during that period in the 80's was one of the most expensive for admission
scousemouse Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Although this ground was comparatively nice compared to some of the grounds mentioned so far , it has to be in the list just because of it's name : Gay Meadow - Shrewsbury Town ( no wonder they're <deleted> ). Funnily enough it just got closed down last month because their moving to a new stadium , I imagine the players are happy enough as the new one will be called " The new Meadow ".

Spit the Dog Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 But the prize for the worst football ground in the whole world goes to Sid James Park (Newcastle) affectionately known as Skunkville or the Landfill. Full of barcoded skunks who are imprisoned in their lopsided prison block. Afraid that nobody will come back, the gates are locked from both the inside and the outside. Unless you have ever been there, the stench is unimaginable. Shock! Horror! I thought that you would have went for Hartlepool.

I went there to watch the much feared Hartlepool - Darlington derby once. Only 6,000 fans there but they didn't half hate each other! I saw more trouble there than at any Sunderland - N*wc*stl* match.

chavy Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Once had the "pleasure" of going to Scarborough's Mcain Stadium just after they were promoted to the FL. A couple of weeks later that Wolves fan fell through the stand roof Hull was also a crappy destination. I went with Forest for a pre season game & when got there the ground was condemed but were allowed to open part of the terracing & a small amount of seats. They eventually scrapped the cash together to carry out repairs so they could start the season. I'm pleased that they got their new ground & good backers to get things going again
wileycoyote Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Fraserburgh Scotland I've seen better ploughed fields !
EastSaxCol Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Ive got bad memories of Estadio da Luz the only time that I went there. Look at the picture, it looks fine. Unless it pisses it down. Which it did. http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/6739/josealvalade24aq.jpg Think that they've got a new one sice Euro 2000 though. Celtic lost about 3-0 I think.

I went in the 90's with Forest when they were lording it in the first division, the away end was a traditional open terrace which, as those residents & frequent visitors to Manchester will agree , is very dangerous if you want to stay dry. We got soaked to the skin but still won. Apart from that it's an ok place but wouldn't make it onto my favourites list
