Veg Festival Skewering

Well after years of this happening on my doorstep I have never seen this with my own eyes. Last years attempt involved being told the wrong day and missing it.

What day is the busiest and most 'full on' for the 'putting skewers and other foriegn objects through my cheeks' process ??

And what location on the phuket town processions ??

i, too, have never seen it up close. my neighbours are chinese, and last year they had a 'spirit' visit them each friday night and take up residence in some mans body for a few hours. was very interesting to watch.

ok, go to www.phuketvegetarian.com and you will see a calendar on the left hand side. click on the date and you get the highlights.

Thanks for that, didnt have that site..

However I just looked at the calender and none of the days are marked with any 'face skewering' time.. Tho the 17th does have 'bladed ladder climbing' and 'nail bridge crossing' (along with 20:45 Oil Bathing, Tying Children's Wrist) !!

So I am still a little bit at a loss as to the best way to maximise my chances of seeing the scary stuff. If anyone has any suggestions still curious.

There are processions in Phuket Town for about 6 days, which I think will be from 13 - 19 October. Each procession is for devotees from different shrines in Phuket. I followed the procession last year from Kathu Village into Phuket Town - quite a hike! On all of these you will have "face skewering". I took some photos which you can find on my blog, although I do believe you have to click my profile to find the blog link.

I was at Kathu Village at 6am to catch the procession coming out of the village - no need to be in town. I then followed them into town and I stood a couple of blocks North of the market.

It's also worth wandering the streets around Bang Neow Shrine or Jui Tui shrine in town any evening, sampling some of the food (I ate the food for 10 days last year - it does clear out your system to be sure). There's also a lot of activity at Sam Kong Shrine which is just along the road past Tesco Lotus heading towards Phuket Bangkok Hospital. Kathu Village Shrine is my "local" so I like to walk around there and would like to be at the temple 5am on the 18th this year when they do their procession. At 5am is when they summon the spirits to enter the bodies of the devotees.
