Junk Food

Featured Replies

I buy a pizza from Pizza Company - Junk food - yes.

I make a pizza at home - Junk food - no.

Hamburger from BK - Yes.

Hamburger made at home - no.

Calories and fats and whatever else all probably the same.

So what exactly is junk food? Food that is bad for us or just a name given to large multi-national companies that have perfected marketing to human grazing habits by radical lentil eating lefties?

Somebody please let me know because I cannot draw a clean distinction between what is junk food and what isn't.

Cheers!

OK Soundfellow. Serious answer. Give the food to one of your teenage offspring ( borrow one if you don't have one..i have two, I'll lend you one ).

If they like it....Junk, don't even feed it to the dog, it will die.

If they say phrases like " Dad...It's got green in it !!" or " No one eats this anymore ".

Safe as houses.

For me it depends how "healthy" you make it if making it at home..or I would still consider it junk food.

Generally food such as hamburgers and pizza, are laden with high fats, Carbs, flavour enhancers, etc.

If you are making similar food at home (from scratch) with leaner meat, less oil, whole wheat flour/bread etc..then its healthiER..but still not quite exactly 'healthy'. (and i mean making the burger yourself rather than bought from the freezer section..as this kind of burger is just as bad unless it has been made in a healthier way.) Making at home things like your own pizza bases means you are more aware of salt, fat, etc content and make without the use of preservatives and additives.

But even then too much of this kind of food can be unhealthy, just less so when made in a healthier way. Diet should be balanced.

Diet should be balanced.

you wouldnt want to hear about my diet then eek :o

anyway, where you been.....? been away preparing a healthy meal for me have you :D

OK - For arguments sake!

I make a hamburger at home:

Two slices of wholemeal bread, fresh pulverised pork, fresh bacon, slice of cheese, egg, onion, lettuce, pickle, jalapeno, mustard, pork stock, salt & pepper.

Although absolutely delicious, would it be considered junk food when weighed up against a BK whopper?

What about all the sugar?

And is beer junk food? :o

beer is made of barley aint it?

now to the question of thai food...in fact the real thai food is very healthy, with lots of herbs and not so much fat if you leave out the coconut based curries. even with the coconut milk, the herbs should help offset some of the fat/bad cholesterol. Personally i think the heart disease has a lot more to do with no exercise than the food per se. (ofcourse food contributes too...but with an uneducated guess...Id say its more exercise (lack-of)....thais are in general not very good about exercising......I know cos I fall within that majority too

ok I dislike this thread...it makes me sound like a good-for-nothing-junk-food-addict :o

junk food is ok if eaten in moderation ,say once a week ,stay away from processed food and sugary things ,ah shit eat what you like you only live once . :o

I believe this discussion DOES NOT belong here :o since we have established chocolate is NOT junk food :D

however, should you wish to continue discussions on the merits of chocolates you can choose to do so here :bah:

Ok, first of all thats not even a hamburger. Im not sure what the hel_l it is, healthy or not. I would'nt eat it. I would have to agree with EEK. If you made so called junk type food at home you probally would take the time to drain the fat off and use better ingredents., making it less fattening. Not much because if it was totally healthy for you, you would'nt eat it either. In the states, it has been moved up to "fast food" status.

Now chocolate, is perfectly healthy :o

Breakfast = chocolate and eggs.

Lunch = a chocolate sandwich.

Dinner = a chocolate steak with a side of chocolate.

Yum Yum.

Moo grorp is healthy? :o

I believe thats the thai adaptation of Chinese food.

to share with you on what 'traditional' thai food used to consist of:

soups, like "gaeng liang", "gaeng chued", steamed vegetables eaten with "namprik". or think "khao chae" the coconut-based curries Im not sure how far back it dates...but even then for the rural population it was mostly namprik, eaten with vegetables, small shrimps and fish....mostly grilled fish. definitely a very healthy diet Id say

the stir-frys with oil also came later.

Fair enough lol! But im sure your diet is just fine! We cant always be food saints. :D

Just seem to have been busy lately. Not had much time to read TV posts. Ive realised its hard to catch up with posts when one doesn't read TV for a while! As for the healthy meal..hmm.. if im v clever i could maybe figure out something involving chocolate for you. um yum! But, sadly, im not sure im quite that clever. :D

'

Wiki info on whoppers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whopper.

If you were to make the burger with the ingredients you mentioned..so long as the meat was lean, good low fat cheese (rather than kraft style slices) etc...then it would of course be healthier than the BK Whopper. But still..its not healthy. Sorry to burst your bubble. :o Definitely better for you than the BK one though. Of course a healthier version would be no meat at all but as you prob know..im biased :D

Thing is..food like Pizza Hut Pizza, BK burgers, Mac Milkshakes etc are not great for you. BUT, so long as you dont eat them often they are just deliciously sinful treats. I say..dont get too worried about it. If you like junk-style food regularly then opt for making the healthier version at home..but if its just a once in a blue moon/couple of times a month treat..then enjoy the indulgence. Just make sure the rest of the time you eat healthy meals and get reg exercise. If you wish to be more health conscious then make the healthier versions at home but still only have meals like that a few times a month.

junk food is ok if eaten in moderation ,say once a week ,stay away from processed food and sugary things ,ah shit eat what you like you only live once . :bah:

Indeed..you only live once. But if you eat like that ..you just wont live as long :D

Moderation? TLW :D

So I'll live longer if I only get wasted once a fortnight instaed of four nights?

What ingredients would you use to amke a healthy & tasty hamburger? (No $#%#^% Tofu or lentils!)

Im not a burger pro (esp cuz i dont eat meat) but im sure there would be plenty of healthy burger recipes on the net.

If you like thick burgers then i suggest maybe blending lean meat with some veggies and then grilling rather then frying in oil. Or just make a big burger from lean meat and onions..but grill grill grill.

Would be healthiest too using whole grain/whole wheat bread.. But check the ingredients. A lot of brown bread is deceptive in that some brands are just white bread coloured brown! Sneaky buggers eh!

Ok..i just googled "low fat burgers" and a ton of links came up. If your serious about finding a healthy version then it would be useful having a look at a few of the sights and trying out one you like the look of.

Im sure you will also find healthier low fat recipes for all your fav junk-style food. :o

Who in their right mind would deep fry a burger patty? Drill, BBQ etc - good stuff!

We'll get onto pizza's next!

At the moment I buy the bases by the dozen at Makro along with "Aro" cheese. All fresh ingredients...

Any suggestions?

switch to my diet of potato chips (crisps), chocolates, cashew nuts, chocolate cakes and orange juice :o

<<oops did I reveal my secret so easily!!>>

but seriously...what about switching to the 'traditional' thai food I mentioned above. cut out the carbs in your diet and you will do well. and yeh Im one to talk :D

Traditional Thai pizza? Are you on medications woman? Absolutley in-edible! :D

I agree with all of the healthy suggestions except one. Cutting out carbs! Carbs are essential for energy, so fewer processed carbs, and a balance of carbs with every meal is far healthier.

As for your burgers and pizzas, made at home will also be healthier. Pizza made with fresh tasty ingredients is a healthy option, burgers made at home are probably more healthy as you wouldn't add in any of the cr@p that burger joints add in. However, they are still not considered 'health' food. Make them healthier and have a nice side salad with a nice home made dressing, eat them once or twice a week and you can't go far wrong...

Enjoy.

ps Forget about the living longer, think about living better!

Traditional Thai pizza? Are you on medications woman? Absolutley in-edible! :o

DOH! who said anything about pizza :D I said all the numprik and grilled fish, boiled veggies. sheesh!

but to make it balance ofcourse you will need some healthy dessert...I recommend chocolates :D

speaking of which...thats the medication Im missing today....not had my dose yet....but now that Im home it can easily be rectified :D

miggy migs..do you like chilli chocolate? Had some once..good quality dark chocolate with a chilli kick. Although probably not prik pet enough for you? Thai people seem to be immune to chilli!! I had some SomTam yesterday and forgot to mention that i dont like too spicy..YOWZ! I couldnt finish it :o

soundman..pizza is so easy to make healthy. Try even making the bases yourself..so simple and fast. In fact making your own pasta is fast too. Ravioli is easier than you think also. Plus can fill with whatever filling you want. Yummmm all this food talk is making me hungry!

miggy migs..do you like chilli chocolate?

yes Ive had a number of chili chocs...mostly from Italy, but also tried one from Green & Blacks (thats english). recently was given some from germany too, but i havent got round to trying those yet. to be honest, the best one was the italian ones....but even then I prefer the more conventional milk chocolates :D

and please dont mention home-made pasta :o I have some bitter-sweet memory of that..... sighhhhhhh

No tofu :o

I like on a beef burger, lettuce, onions, tomato a sliced dill pickle...

I try to stay away from breads and cheese it's not always that easy in the midwest.

Yes, the bbq grill is the best way to cook a burger or anything for that matter.

Now im getting hungry, I think I will grill up 4-5 burgers :D
