:o I had Norton and binned it several months early, after that I stopped getting the monthly blue screen of death and my PC was twice as fast. I tried onecare which worked great, but when trail ran out and I had problem paying for it from Overseas. (M$ clowns) So I try Antivir which at first seemed to work well, but a few days ago it stopped updating and won't scan because its out of date. I have tried many times everyday to get it connected but the servers for updates all six of them are timing out, sometimes get connected for a few minutes then drop out. They have no problem serving up the daily ad pop up to buy it. (fat chance at this point) I have been to the Antivir forums and this seems to be a normal thing to have happen and found treads about the issue going back more then a year. Would rate this 0 protection at this point. Has anyone else been using the classic edition antivir? How are your updates? What is the other free version of AV called AVG I can't go forever without a scan I am going to have to bin this one too. Any other suggested programs? :D Maybe I ll just reinstall windows and get another 90 days of onecare live. :D

Avast is great and: FREE!

I use Avast serveral years as Free and as paid version (for Business and Mail-Server) and having any problems.

An other fee AV is Clam for Windows. From the security level seems to me like Avast and even uses very little resources and memory, same Avast!

I was try to download AntiVir but the speed was just as 1.2 kBps while I get from MS just around 240 kBps!! A bit difference!

Really, go for Avast!!

If it works, stick with it. MS almost withdrew OneCare from service after it failed detection tests (82%). Antivir scored 99% in the same tests.

Personally, I prefer to go with NOD32 or Kaspersky. Worth every penny. NOD32 seems to be better at catching these weird local thumb drive scripts and stuff.

New virii pop up every day, and pretty much no single package is good for very long. Original viruses came with programs, and attached themselves to programs. Then it was documents. Then chat programs. Then worms. Then web sites. Now it's thumb drives. They're constantly evolving, and the mode of infection keeps changing. An antivirus program that's good today might be practically powerless in a few months.

The ones who invest in research have been consistently good. Some have just become too intrusive and bloated (Norton/Symantec). Never seen one go from good to powerless in a few months.

I have been using Antivir for about 6 months now & I find it the best antivirus I've ever used. Yes, sometimes you can have dramas with the auto updates but that's more to do with web congestion etc than the antivirus itself.

Of course, one must make sure that the antivirus is configured correctly & that the time/date on your computer is correct.

Back when I started tring out onecare C/net had it rated number 3 with 98% and notrton was #1 and I think it was Kep that they had at two.  I ll run with this until next time as I have setup for avest in My Doc ready to go.  I like the set up box in Antivir that lets u select how many days of failed updates would you like before we tell you its not working.  Default is 3 days. I have it now set to one. :o

When I first started using Antivir I also had problems with updates. It appears that with the free version they do not want you to get more than one update a day, and the default scheduler is set at one day (24 hour) intervals. I changed that to daily at a specific time (for me 5:30 am) and have had no problems since.

I have had it set from the start at midnight at the server, once a day for update with scan 12 hours later. The default set of notify when updates fail was set at three days so I didn't know it was failing updates for three days.  In fact I missed that part of the setup I assumed all failure would be reported right away.  I now have that set to tell me if updates fails same day it fails.  I will try avest and see how it works. I have the setup for antivir backed up I can always come back.

I've been using antvir for almost a year now and have never had any problems with it, still working fine, it has never found a virus but that means I don't have any :-) updates run without problems almost every day
