Anyone know any apartments going in Patong for the cost conscious? Needed til April and preferably somewhere reasonably central, or at least safe to walk to without being run over by motorbikes.

could try wang nam yen apartments. (at least i THINK thats the name of them). go up sai naam yen rd and you see Montes pub on the right. turn up the steep hill and its the first apartment block on the right hand side.

Rattana hill just there too.. Both very out of central tho..

Baan Ton Sai is cheap rooms... Lots of small places and not so busy by then. But advance booking is always awkward in that end of the market.

i had a look on the net at these places. about 700/night 19k/month. You consider this cheap for that location? Is phuket really that expensive. I haven't been there in years.

High season.. Under 20k with a pool.. Your not picky are you ?!?!?

I know pool less guesthouses charging 2500 per night for normal rooms at peak season..

Then again those are the prices on the net !! Get out (fast before any more of the hordes arrive) and get something long stay booked tight, not a hotel type deal who are losing out on the massive nightly rates peak season offers.. I know a mate just took a small condo in sky in for 10k ish range, but give it a couple more weeks and those are rare as rocking horse shit. Network the expat bars ASAP.

Patong becomes ###### near impossible in high / peak season.

High and Low seasons (demand) dictate rents. It's the same in Phuket as it is in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Once you have an apartment, the rent usually stays fixed. If you rent in the low season, or early in the high season, you'll get a better price than later in the year when the lower priced units are full anyway.

I drove some (Thai) friends around Nanai today and they found a room for 6000/month. You just have to beat the street and take what's available.

I'm sure you can find a room with a pool for 15ish. If you're not picky and only want clean, convenient, keep trying. There are places for 7-8000.

Mind you, there are more Thais than ever in Patong. That makes the low end rooms even more scarce.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies and suggestions all. Do you know if that 6000 room had other vacancies? Where was it?

I don't necessarily need to go completely cheap charlie - could go to 15k maybe and couldn't care less about a pool, but was quoted 25k for a 1 bed flat under 9th floor restaurant on Ratuthit, which was a bit of a shock, not least because there's major building work being undertaken on the top floor.

I really hate accommodation looking here - there's are "for rent" signs everywhere, but it's usually impossible to see where the room is or find someone to show you. A room finder service (run by good English speaking Thais) might be a good business idea actually... I'd be quite happy to pay a service charge for someone to do the legwork for me.

I was in this fix until recently. At this time of year rooms won`t come to you, you have to search this forum and phuketinfo for the budget places and email them asking for long term rates. Phuket, compared to other thai resorts, has a more extreme high/low season, and charges increase exponentially accordingly. For example I was quoted 100k a month - yes a month - for the yorkshire inn! Some places prefer higher mark up short stay, than filling the rooms with long stay. Get searching and emailing!

http://villapatong.com/ rooms 7k per month..

All in the gazette.. Read it..

Been there. Done that. The trouble with the gazette is it gets so few ads they just keep running old ones for months, meaning they'll either be gone (like the Nanai one) or are low season prices (like the villapatong one).

I just need to stop being such a lazy git and beat the streets.

Re the roomfinder service..

Was actually talking to a TG about helping her do exactly this..

I think it's a good idea. It could be wider than just accommodation - sort of a general finder service for farang too stupid or lazy to get something themselves. I know I fall into those categories, so I'd use it.

That's an extraordinary amount of money for a room on a soi that can be very noisy.

The (gay owned IIRC but not over the top) guesthouse over the road from Mae Ubol (Lanna Thai ??) is advertsing 7k per month rooms with a card today...

I maust have seen 4 or more 'for rent' signs on nanai today.. Gotta beat the streets..

I'm getting nowhere with this - everywhere is either full or asking silly money - my mate's girlfriend got him a distinctly ordinary room on nanai for 5500/month a few weeks ago - they quoted me 15000 yesterday and wouldn't budge! A Guesthouse I paid 9.5k for a couple of months ago are now asking 28k! There are still a few options in the further out guesthouses, and I also suspect "high fever excitement" has set in a touch prematurely.

SH, I don't know if they had more rooms, but I see signs everywhere. I wouldn't answer any adds or hire anyone... just go out and find a room :o I would go to the places, areas that you'd be happy living at. Phuket Palace, Montana, City Inn... Rent a motorcycle and hit Nanai.

I agree about beat the street. Saw behind Carefour for 13K+, get 'em before it's too late.

There are still places about - don't worry. If the worst comes to the worst (and it's pretty bad), you can always contact the Vises Hotel, near the Hospital, which will do you 3 months for 12k/month, as long as you pay up front.

Google it to see it in all it's glory, but be prepared that it's not been updated since it was built. Or cleaned, probably...
