Hello guys

I probably don't need to point out that it's a long, long ride.

And, quite frankly, rather boring.

You will probably want to factor in at least one overnight along the route.

This could make it more interesting & worthwhile.

Just a quick note on timings - I do CM-BKK in about 6hrs 30mns riding a GS12.

8 on a Triumph.

When GS was new & running in I did BKK-PKT in under 12hrs.

On the rtn PKT-BKK I stopped off in Hua Hin.

But your route can easily avoid the BKK mayhem cutting your ride considerably so you could go conceivably makeHH in one hit.

Or make it a 2 nighter and stop off at Kanchanaburi on your way south.

Good luck and good riding.

What bike do you have?

I take it its not a scooter...

I have a CBR 150 and a Phantom and it will be the last one to go.

I have done the trip by car to Penang a lot of time but this time it will be the bike. But only to Phuket

Im in no hurry so if takes 7 hours or one week it dosent matter for me I dont have any time table to keep up with :o

I've read so many interesting road trip reports both on here & GT-Rider. Whenever I do some 'distance' on my bike I tend to have a bag cramed full of clothes etc that's bulky & awkward & I can make my trips in a few hours ! For you guys that take a week or so to do your road trips what do you actually take along ?

Rock On!

It's good to hear that there are still some tourers on bikes that aren't scared to get out there and explore.

Chiang Mai to Phuket boring? Jeez Rodie show some spirit man!

Roadtrips aren't (in my book) about blasting all the way there at top or 4/5s power; It wastes too much fuel and you can't see/enjoy the surroundings that well. That sort of sht IMHO is for if your racing against time and need to get somewhere rapido!

Just cruise and chill with the groove man. :o

What I take:

Spare set of clothes, first aid kit, survival kit (in a tiny tobacco tin). Water, sleeping bag liner, mossie net (face and shoulders). All crammed into a back-back. Wear back-pack (or bungeed to back) and off I roll :D

If I'm staying a while somewhere and solo I may take my laptop (but it's a bitch on the back after 3 hours or so.)

I bungy it down but over time the bungees can get ripped by debris and gravel so all of a sudden your laptops nearly hanging off the bike at 80 kph!! Had that happen just south of Ayuthya with Trucks and buses whizzing past! :D

I just did a short road trip from Udon Thani to Nong Khai so I've got the buzz (neck got burnt to fck though!:D).

Hmm, tempted to join you on that blast man. Are you overnighting in Bangers for partying or planning on a straight blast down on to Phuket?

My problem is I've not yet got my number plates through from the issuing office so I'd be wide open to opportunistic cops at roadblocks/checkpoints :D

Up here in Changers and rural areas the cops are chilled on the no-number plate thing (usually;)) but down south, once you get to Bangers it's risky I think!

How many are signed up so far?

I wish you had this thought/idea one month ago as I was looking to drive from Samut Songkhram (70 km west of Bangkok) to Phuket and would have instantly took you up on the adventure as your venture proposal would have sealed the deal for me. I've only ever gon 150-200 km trips in one go but am really yearning for longer more venturous trips such as this..

PS. ended up taking the bus to Phuket..and about to get the bus back to S. Songkhram this Thursday where my bike has sat lonely for a month :o

But please do post here again more about your trip if it unfolds!
