There's talk that there is to be a new superstore (probably Robinsons), and a new large bus terminal both between BigC and the Thoeng intersection. Anybody heard likewise?

But there is a new TescoLotus opening now in Mae Jaan, just north of the hospital on the other (east) side...

Good,Is it definitely a Tesco and not a TOFS ?

Fingers crossed

Not a TOFS! Tops, I suppose you meant.

Definately TescoLotus like just south of MaeSai - plenty of parking, looks large, promotional banners all around the area.

Elsewhere on CR forum opening date is posted as Oct 12

(why did no-one post info on whatever happened at the Old Runway last weekend?)

Haven't seen the Tops HaYaek yet. Used to like them in BKK, but the one by Edison is a disappointment by me.

The TOPS near the HaYaek is bigger and better than the Edison's one. It's got a small bakery too, with fresh pastries, their bacon/cheese nan bread is delicious. (shoudn't say that as they will sell out of it quickly now!)

If it is true that a robinsons will establise here then I expect a mega TOPS will be included.

Hi Joel. What happened at the old runway last week? I`m not in Chiang Rai at the moment.

What happened at the old runway last week?

I'm not sure. i went to exercize, and found the place a huge mess. It appeared there had been a concert there. The grass between the old tower and the street is currently a real mess!

The Tops Super near the HaYeak is in Appy Square, which was once to be a Central Dept Store (what it was built for, I think).

I see it's your birthday today Joel.. I hope you're having a happy one, and thanks for your many contributions here.

well I blush! and thanks to Taxi Joe at Crazy 666, MaeNok at Elephant Patpong and Thierry at Reggae for free drinks (and to Terry for cigs). made my day!!!

I see on http://search.lonelyplanet.com/ttsearch.do...tt=Chiang%20Rai

that our fine city "is not really worth a visit in its own right..."

hmmm, well, been living here steady 9 years, visiting starting 19 years ago (did take a 5 year hiatus after taking a bicycle- samlor tour of the knocking shops for about 3 hours - saw at least 40, and in one heard a pre-adolescent crying for her mother - which all did put me off, at least for a while, but all that's pretty thoroughly changed, if I'm not mistaken about what goes on in all the massage and karaoke shops i haven't visited... "Money Massage" indeed!) and expect wild horses couldn't pull me away;

but I have stopped putting out guide-books - and make much less frequent visits to ChiangMai... I'd hate for CR to turn into another CM! This is not a resort!!! 'Scuse; we do have Four Seasons Resort in the Golden Triangle: one night in a tent for B80,000. But you do get an elephant ride, jazz dancing in the 'jungle' and a hand-hammered copper bath-tub. And don't forget the "Martyr's Museum" in Santikiri (as i did in my guidebooks, last one 2005... really just can't explain it, but somehow I've not made it there yet, nor to the Hall of Opium...)...

Must say too, nice to see this forum gaining some civility. Thanks all.

Did not hear about the superstore but the bus station will move to the intersection near the Little Duck. At least I heard....
