Hi

any advice appreciated here. Am looking for a neurosurgeon, preferably with a specialization in epilepsy. I don't need a plain neurologist - have seen them and I know what needs doing. My previous medical care was in Chiang Mai, so could return there, but am now closer to Bangkok. I guess either city will be fine.

As we all know, hospitals may have a reputation but in the end its the individual doctor or surgeon that is most important. So although a long-shot am posting here to see if anybody has any experience of neurosurgeons.

At the moment I'm looking at Samitivej, Bumrungrad or Piyavate. Actually, for no other good reason than because they have decent English websites. However, I don't need a good webmaster, so there may be someone better outside these three. I also notice that some surgeons work at more than one hospital so the search is for a good neurosurgeon plus the right hospital.

thanks

Already provided this info to OP in an exchange of PMs, but for the benefit of anyone else who might need the info:

Dr. Atthaporn Boongird - Board certified neurosurgeon, did a fellowship in surgical interventions for epilepsy in the US (Cleveland Clinic 2002 - 2005). He has privileges at both Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospitals. Hours at Bumrungrad are 8 am - noon every Sunday, at Bangkok Hospital Friday 5 - 7 PM.

Another possibility is Dr. Ake Hansasuta at Bumrungrad. He's - US board certified in neurosurgery with special interest in epilepsy surgery, hours Tuesday 5 - 8 PM

Note that Bangkok Hospital has the capacity to do neurosurgery via the "Gamma knife" , a laser-like (actually not laser, but gamma rays) technology which avoids the need to cut into the skull and brain, and minimizes complucations and recovery time.

Gamma knife is not appropriate for all neuriosurgical problems but always worth checking to see if it is, as it is a much less invasive and safer procedure.

As far as I know, Bangkok Hospital is the only place in Thailand with this capability. In fact, there are less than 200 places worldwide that offer it as yet.
