yes there is one from Chiang Rai to Udon, (therefore, it is very much likely that this bus goes in the opposite direction as well.....).

not the luxurious version, though, must be something between 1st class and 2nd class..... not very comfortable for a Farang to travel 10 hours....

in 2005 I sent a Thai friend back home from Chiang Rai to Udon, and even he was just 165 cm and small body, he did not like the journey very much....

if money is not too much an issue for u, why not fly UDON - CM and then take the VIP24-Bus to Chiang Rai from there ?

CF my wife and i have done Lam Plai Mat (not far from you) to Chiang Rai quite a few times and it's not a bad trip. Take a local bus into Korat main bus station and then you can get a VIP bus direct to Chiang rai - it goes on to Mae Sai on the Burmese border.

It's not a bad trip and if I remember correctly it costs about Bt700

There is a Khon Kaen CR bus.....the KK-CR ride is a bit easier than the Udon-CR trip....but it's no fun either.

I'd definitely fly. Going by bus is a LONG haul. Nok Air from Udon is not that expensive. Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai is a short bus trip.
