I have been asked by a friend to help him get his laptop working properly. It's a BENQ notebook (laptop), running legitimate Windows XP Home, with all the Service Packs.

Two days ago, a lot of the keyboard characters won't work - the number keys and T Y P G H, backspace and delete.

I did a Google search and came up with two possibilities:

1) The conection between the keypad and the motherboard is loose. I don't think this is the reason as most of the other keys work.

2) He has hit a combination of the Function (Fn - in light blue just to the right of the Ctrl key) and some other keys accidentally.

I am unable to find out how to reset things back to normal - so all the keys work.

I did try going to Start > Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > On-Screen Keyboard - but couldn't get it to work.

I also tried Start > Settings > Control Panel > Keyboard > Hardware - that shows : The device is working properly.

Anybody know how to use the Fn key properly ?

To check the Keyboard is ok just boot the Laptop from an Windows CD, choose the first option to repair which will bring you to the C:/ command prompt. Here you can check which k3eys working normally. If there some keys didn't works then it's time to bring the laptop to service! If all key working, it's a problem with the installed Windows.
