Hello TV friends I'm helping out a class of kids some of which are on PC and some are on Mac.

My Mac experiance is limited I used it in Early school up to middle school and then went PC (Win '95) in Highschool and havn't been back since.

So basically I havn't used one in about 15 years.

since they're gaining in popularity I've hopped on one recently to try to relearn some old tricks and give the kids a few pointers. The Mac's raise in popularity is a double edged swoard however as there are now viruses being developed to target the Mac.

Is there a good free Anti-virus for the Mac? (AVG, Anti-vir, or Avast for Mac?)

Starting form scratch the only one I've found sofar is ClamXav on Downlaod.com

Is this any good should I go with it?

I use the clam in my Linux and because I have KDE I use Klam a GUI so I don't have to run clam from the commandline.  Its all good.  I don't do Mac but if I rem. correct that version has a GUI built in and works well, If not built in then I am sure they have some kind of GUI for Mac.  The others you may have to go to the web sites and read up on them.

Since when did Mac need anti-virus software?

First Ever Virus for Mac OS X. Though the terminology is not really correct and it is a worm. Symantec and Sophos sites suggest more could happen at anytime and should be using virus protection. But of course they both make virus protection systems and as such take it with a grain of salt.

I think the "First Ever Virus for Mac OS X" story was just to get more sales. I have never used anti virus software for my mac and do not intend to until i hear of "real" mac users getting infected.

People that sell products often lie to get more sales. It's like the "elephant repellant" you can buy in UK garden centres. I used it and never had an elephant in my garden. :o

I don't disagree. Apparently the author of this worm left a message in it saying how difficult it was to write.

Ipods can be formatted for either windows or Mac. They are not the same. I don't know but i would give a good guess that the affected ipods are windows format.

Remember that antivirus software scans everything you download and therefore slows down your surfing. If you don't need it you are slowing things down for no purpose.

The main reason for av in linux and mac is to protect windows user you share files with. 95% of the things clam looks for are virus which only effect windows that you may pass to a pc on your network or others. The main reason I run clamav is send mail cleaning and incoming emails.  When I reboot into XP I now have a ntfs drive which comes up in ether system adhoc network drive as it were.  I have to be sure it stays clean for xp which only starts av working after its fully booted to a users screen which can be to late.
