Satalite Disc Channels

Recommended Posts

Hi I was told by a Thai friend that there is a satalite disc for about 7000 baht that has more channels then UBC and its just a one time payment. I have not heard of this before and also want to know if the channels are in English? Also someone mentioned a disc also with Malaysian TV shows.

Can someone please tell me where i might find out more information? I have never even had UBC before and in general am not a big TV-watching person but the BBC or Aljazeera and some National Geo/Discovery and a few trashy TV programs now and then might be nice..........

Thanks

We can pick up UBC, Astro, Multichoice, Telstar18 can all be picked up with a movable dish. These are all pay channels but there are ways of accessing them. However to be honest if your going to get into sat hacking it will end up more expensive not less as you buy specialist equipment, acess hardware and currently need broadband for part of the process.

What exactly are you trying to find out ??

HI. I just want to know what the difference is and if there is a website where i can find out what legal channels I get. I dont want to hack anything.. just some decent tv. However as it was explained that there was a legal dish for about 7000 baht as an alternative to UBC......

Is this wrong?

Thanks for the reply ......... Its all new territory to me.

There are many legal free to air channels with a steer-dish. They go from ABC Asia on PAS 2, which is nearly on the Eastern Horizon to PAS 7/10 with more interesting and free to air stuff like Aljazerra and Russia today.

There are also many channels on Thaicom 5 including the odd English Free to Air.

If you don't need a broadband internet connection or some "Special Card" or codes then you will be sure you are getting the real Free to Air, that has lots to explore.

Also if you live in the south, and have a friend in Australia, then you can get the card for free from the Australian Broadcasting Authority to watch Australian TV for free also.

Free to air is pretty limited to be really honest tho ?? Plus its different channels on all kinds of different birds, dish moving times as you channel scan, much more a hobby than simply 'buying tv'.

And as for pay TV alternatives UBC has a monopoly license so any other pay systems cannot be legal in Thailand by definition.

I investigated the Astro option a couple of years back. Thought it might be a much cheaper option to the 20,000+ baht/year for UBC. But when I did some checks I found that the decoder box and card was purchased in Malaysia and illegally brought into Thailand. The initial 7,000 baht only gives a one year card (at best), which would still have been cheaper than one year with UBC, but there was no gurantee that the card would even last one month. It's a pay your money, no support, and hope for the best.

Anyone have any good reports about Astro deals. I'm still looking for a cheaper UBC option.

If you are in a cable TV area (no dish), then that is a very good option at 300 baht/month. Lots of english speak channels, 4 sports chanels, and at least 4 movie chanels.

Astro is cheaper if you only have the basic package.. But by the time you add the movie package, sports package, etc.. It comes out to close to the same as UBC, again for a 1 year unsupported card.. Couple of years back they had weak encryption so you could get it for the decoder cost.

I have to say I prefer Astro as a set of channels, but then I still need a UBC card (not active) to keep the missus happy with Thai channels.
