Hi folks.

I need to set up a public chat room for something next month, I could go the web based route but I really don't like doing it that way very much.

Does anyone know of a way to set up a public chat room using something like MSN as the client? I know I can do it with Skype but I would prefer something a little thinner.

You might try Microsoft Netmeeting. It comes with XP but not automatically setup, they want you to use MSN. :o Just use the run command and type in "conf" without the quotes. It's meant for conferencing but has chat, white board, camera (though newer drivers may not work).

I havn't used netmeeting in years, it used to work quite well I rememeber.

I don't think it will suit my needs for this task though, I basically want to add a link to a web page that would pull the user into a chat room, I think I'm probably going to have to go the web based route, I can't think of any other way to do it.

Hmm, maybe some sort of javascript thingy fronting a IRC channel might work, time for a bit of a google I think.

I've used the web-based application "FlashChat" (Darren's Script Archive - google for it) with great results. Extremely feature laden and easy to integrate into your website.

It's free to use, but a $5 donation gets you the source code to modify it any way you want.

My vote would be for Flashchat too. If you need more feature, I'd also take a look at VMukti.

EDIT: typo

Cheers guys, although I didn't want a web based chat client I think I'm going to have to use one and Flashchat looks decent enough.
