1.I set up my gmail account and then opend Microsoft outlook to add an email account.

2.On the outlook Internet email setting I entered the following information:-

User Information

Your name; My full name

E-mail address: [email protected] (my new gmail address)

Logon Information

User name [email protected]

Password: My gmail password

Server information

Http mail service provider: other

Server URL : HTTP://mail.google.com/mail

The next screen then presents me with this information

Email accounts

Name mail.google.com

Type HTTP (default)

Deliver new email to the following location : personal folders

I have sent a couple of test emails to my gmail account which I can see when I log onto gmail but they do not appear in my Outlook inbox.

I concur, in addition g mail is a pop account not http, that may be your problem.

And you need to set the ports - they are non-standard, or at least one of them is.

And if you prefer to keep emails on the server, Gmail also offers IMAP connectivity. Outlook is a very poor IMAP client however, it freezes anytime it is waiting for data.

And yet Outlook Express works surprisingly well, it's as if they are pushing people to use MS Exchange servers .... Naaaa!!! They would never do that.

Here's an interesting look into how poor Outlook is for IMAP.... from an MS developer! He recommends people use Thunderbird instead, i love it.

Thunderbird as well here on Ubuntu, But by chance the GNU/Linux distros don't suffer the native Outlook Express virus.
