I bring this up only because I was looking at a book about Polynesia in the 1800s.

It was mainly a picture book. It showed many bare chested woman in Hawaii and Tahiti mostly and some other islands. It reminded me of other books that I had seen about Thailand where the women often went about bare chested.

In Polynesia, this was normal practice until Christian missionaries came and forced them to cover up. I guess the same happened in Thailand.

This got me thinking. As we have come around into a new century, it is very common to see western white women casually exposing themselves from the waist up, sometimes the full monty, on beaches around the very same areas where missionaries once plied their trade. It must confuse the heck out of local people. Maybe many local people are just not aware of history. It confuses the bloody heck out of me though.

Yeah, it's a funny development, ain't it? I think the vast majority of local people never reflect that far - at least that is my experience.

From what I've seen so far, most Thai people look to the latter part of the 19th century for guidance on what is perceived as 'Thai' values. The irony of this is that this is the age of the great sage kings Mongkut and Chulalongkorn who were both enlightened rulers with a desire for balanced and reflective social reform - very much unlike the conservatives of today. It also so happened that the dominating mainstream at the time was Victorian... need I say more?

Then again, this same bigot pattern is repeated with right-wing Christians in the West and fundamentalist Muslims. They fail to see that what Muhammed and Jesus were all about was to create a better society more in line with the times (Muhammed improved women's position in society, Jesus said it's alright to hang out with bargirls and that they should be judged on personality and not from profession...)

But we all have our blinders to some extent, don't we?

All I know is that it's legal in Ontario, Canada for women to be topless in public. Social progress can be enlightening and fun too.

I live in florida and we have many occasions that women can get naked go to any nightclub they have wet t shirt contests and best body contests getting all the crowds wild don't get me wrong i been to my share now that i'm married i look at these things it it seems to me degrading to women.

Back to the original subject matter, and showing my age a bit I'm afraid.

I personally believe western values are pretty much a figment of some marketing guru's imagination. They certainly vary dramatically from person to person, rural to city dweller, rich to poor,generation to generation and between the genders and those with differing education standards.

Seeing the photos above, I well remember the Isle of Wight festival and others near Oxford & elsewhere in the UK, plus Woodstock in the USA etc, where a significant portion of the croud went about stark naked, apart from their beads. Took little brother & a friend to one concert and watched their eyes drop out and jaw hit the ground at the sight of a truly beautiful, naked hermaphrodite. He has hardly recovered to this day!

My own Western Values have changed somewhat since those days, but they in no way conform to any "average" ser of beliefs or values.
