Slightly Obscure Question About Multiple Nics In One Machine

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a machine here that has both wired and wireless network adapters. I have a wi-fi router. The machine has both interfaces enabled. When I boot it it obtains IP addresses from the router via DHCP. Both interfaces (wired and wireless) are given a good IP address. IPCONFIG reports them both with appropriate configurations. O/S is XP SP2. My question is does the machine use both interfaces during network activity or does it use one of them by default and not use the other?

If they're both on the same network only 1 is used. Issue this command:

netstat -r

and check the metric value. The lowest metric value shows the interface being used at that moment.
