Am doing a visa mission to Penang end of this month, have searched the forum and am still none the wiser where to stay. Can anyone help?? Am taking the GF for a weeks holiday, thus killing two birds with one proverbial stone. Want to stay somewhere reasonably central , and want to pay as little as possible for as much as possible......nice guesthouse or medium priced hotel???

Some have recomended visa agents, but I figure unless you have a million 30 day visa's, you're better off going to the consulate yourself.....is this the case??? Is the best I can hope for a 3 month visa??? or could an agent get me a 12 month multi entry??? (I doubt this from what I've read)

Any other info any one can offer would be appreciated (am flying with Airasia)

I always used the Hotel Continental at the end of Jalan Penang which is within walk of main tourist/backpacker area but much better class hotel at about 900 baht or so. Most of the hotels below this price range are very musty and old compared with Thailand. If this is too much you might try the Waldorf or Cathay hotels on the street behind which would probably be in the 4-500 baht range.

I would do the trip to Consulate myself the first time so you know where it is and what is expected. Have taxi wait for you and arrange r/t price. Guard at Consulate used to provide forms and assist in filling them out/advise if multi entry visa available etc for a small tip. I don't believe an agent will be able to get you a one year visa without documents.

Have a good trip and take an evening pedicab ride around Georgetown.

Depends what you are after, you could stay in Georgetown itself or out at one of the beaches possibly Batu Ferringhi on the north shore (both approx 40 mins from airport by taxi) . If you fancy Georgetown i always recommend the Hotel Continental (not Grand Continental) on Jalan Penang...its a 1000 baht a night but has a pool (a lot dont in Georgetown). If you fancy the beach, you could try Ferringhi Beach Hotel (do a google search there are many more). I/d recommend an agent if you want a double entry they can smooth things over a little better with the Consulate than if you go on your own......(Recommend Parvez Travel in front of the Swiss Hotel on Lebuh Chulia for an agent)......a double entry is about the best you can hope for at the moment.

There you go 2 recommendations for the same hotel. Only reason i mentioned the beach resorts on the north shore is that you may find a week in Georgetown a little long.........but i guess thats up to the individual. Change a bit of money before you leave the airport to pay your taxi to Georgetown..........there are plenty of moneychangers around Penang that will change the bulk of it at favourable rates. Almost forgot you can book the Continental on the internet...do a search. :o

for a first timer and tight budget like you, staying in town is your best choice, and the hotel recommend above should be ok.
