I'm Off To The Hospital

Good luck to you & a speedy recovery. My Dad had the same operation & felt a heck of a lot better after. He was supposed to change his diet but decided to get more pumpui instead. If you change your diet after you will be healthy again from the illness.

Good luck. Hear from you soon!

Thanks for enlightening me about this disease/condition, LP!

Never heard about it before and after a google I found this link: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/p...diverticulosis/ and must say that some of the symptoms apply to me as well...I linked it to stress so far as my life/work is quite stressful at times...

For a start, I will try this high-fiber diet that they recommend, although it is different to what KanWin recommends above...

anyways, good luck with your colonscopy (the sheer thought of it..... :o )

When I had it for the first time 12 years ago I was trying to lose some weight and drank just tomato juice for a period next to some light fruit. The horrendous pain I suffered back than made me drive myself (was alone at the time) to the hospital and crawled into the first aid entrance...

The diagnosis 'Diverticulitis' was also never heard of by me at the time.

Of course I took more fiber diet food after that and it never returned until early february this year.

That's odd because since many years I also take 'Psyllium Husk Caps* 500 mg/each' and take 2x 3 caps daily. This is a natural fiber. It has the phenomenon that it swells and binds the food, once in the testine(s) and makes the food pass smoothly till the end, so to speak :D

Most people in the west over 40/45 have diverticula in their testine but never have a problem; just 20-25% will suffer from diverticulitis and I'm one of them.

* Psyillium Husk Caps - I order them from the US and I think it's hard to get in the Far East. If you wish I can PM you the details of the supplier as they have the best quality and quite reasonably priced actually.

Good luck !

well...I have luckily no weight problem, rather the lack of it. However, I skip much too often breakfast and sometimes even lunch or have nothing but a fast slice of pizza...and the more I eat regularly the less the "stomach problems" are...

Other than that I try to eat as balanced as possible but prefer the meat over the veggies unless they are smothered in cream sauce :o

That's pretty unhealthy.... :D try to change and DO breakfast every day; nice brown bread and such.

available here in thailand , most decent pharmacies have it , brand name "mucillin", (its actually the very similar ispaghula husk as an orange flavoured powder , 400gms for about 200-240b , mix into a glass of water and drink)

However, a Colonoscopy is not an operation, it's more an "endoscopic examination of the large colon and the distal part of the small bowel with a CCD camera or a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus" * :o

Nowadays they give you a sedation but 12 years ago I had the unpleasant experience of undergoing the same without one.... :D

* wikipedia

Colon cancer runs in my family, so I have them about every 3 years now. Each time they give you a sedative that has an amnesia effect. You can do what the doctor tells you to do during the procedure, but afterwords you have no memory of it. I imagine I was uncomfortable during the procedure, but I cannot remember, so it does not really matter.

Not really a bad thing for older people to get every once in a while. If people get colon cancer, they usually get polyps in their colon first. This polyps over time can become cancer. They can find them early during a colonoscopy and burn them off preventing them from becoming cancerous.

Don't forget to ask for the DVD video. Last time they gave me a copy of a DVD of the view from the camera. Makes a great DVD to put in when friends are over, I even added a comentary track. :D

Taxexile: thanks for the info !

jstumbo:

Correct, about the colonoscopy; they told me that they are aiming at increasing doing a colonoscopy for everyone, every 2 years or so (for people above 40) in order to try and prevent late discovery of cancer and other problems.

OK, I'll ask for a DVD video-copy; don't know if they are used to do that in my hospital but I will ask them next week. Thanks for the tip.

AVOID:

whole grains

raw and dried fruits, sultanas, raisins, berries

broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage

all nuts and seeds

--------------------------------------------

Glad to hear all went well Lao Po. One thing I would like to add to this avoid list is all berries with small seeds, my mother found that strawberries and the like, with their little tiny seeds, aggravated her as well.

I had a esophagogastroduodenoscopy ( :D) and a colonoscopy last year. I sat on a couch while they injected pethidine and midazolam. What appeared to be a few seconds later I asked them when they were going to start. It turned out that an hour had gone by and they'd stuck cameras down my throat and up my bum and I simply could not remember a thing. I had no pain at all either.

1. First I thought you were pulling my leg....... :D ...but I Googled and it appears to be true...sorry: I never heard of it before (now...don't tell me you wrote that WITHOUT looking it up...... B)"Esophagogastroduodenoscopy"..

I'll bet the next time you sit in a bar and ask the guy next to you if he had an Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, he might think you escaped from a mental hospital :D

2. So, am I correct to assume you had a double penetration ? :D

Just make sure you smile during the procedure, LP. That way if they see the white of your teeth, they know they've gone too far. :D

Yes - fortunately they used different cameras :D The worst part was two days of taking laxatives beforehand :D

Can confirm that. Had a tennis arm operation many years back. They also gave me a shot of whatever that was and the next thing I remember is that I was lying in my hospital bed on a drip. My parents were there when I woke up and they told later me that I was talking utter <deleted>. They were relieved that I didn't change much under the influence of hard narcotics... :o

He looks suspiciously like an engineer I worked with a few years back.

pethidine and midazolam? So that's what's in the beer here. Every Sunday morning I wake up and don't recall a thing about the past twelve hours and my mates all tell me I was talking utter <deleted>.

Forget about the 500 posts rule, talking uttter <deleted> should be the entry requirement for Bedlam!

LaoPom good to have you back.

be careful if you're doing the colonosc-thingie in Holland. you know the dutch have a reputation for being rather, err... liberal

You're right Kayo; things are getting completely out of control here. I better ask my Surgeon if he smoke joints....

Nowadays even babies smoke...tragic :o
