If you are moving to Thailand with children then yes I would bring books with you. We made a list of books that we want our children to read over the period we planned to be in Thailand and brought those books with us. 'Book Orders' have always been top of the list of instructions to family members coming out to visit us in Thailand and elsewhere.

Libraries (As in public lending libraries) - Non existant

Likewise children's movies and TV Programs - We have a large collection of taped programs and movies for our children, Thai TV being for the most part totally unsuitable for children like wise Cable Channels (With one or two exceptions).

how about British council? I've heard that you can borrow books from the library there..

I'm a Taiwanese, My husband is Singaporean Indian, can any of us borrow from BC?

my baby will be 1 year old when we move to bkk, any recommand picture books for us to buy before we leave ???

thank you so much!!!

It's been a while since we lived there, but as far as I recall, BC has just textbook type although Neilson Hayes does have a very good library whre you can borrow childrens (and adult) books for an annual fee. Just by the British club.

you didn't buy any children books while living there? are they so much more expensive?

thanks a lot!!!

Neilson Hayes Library has children's books you can borrow, however it is only handy for those that live in town so I never use it. If you enrol your baby in a pre-school/int'l school (nursery) you may have access to a library - depends which school. The school where I teach (which has a creche for babies 3 months up) has a big library with lots of books for young children.

There are also a lot book shops, particularly Asia Books and Kinokuniya that sell children's books. There are many others as well - Books on 54 (I think it's called) Nanmee Books, etc. The Kinokuniya in Siam Paragon Shopping Centre has a huge kids section and stocks a lot of the same books that would be in a western book store. In saying that, I still buy kids books whenever I am back in New Zealand, but mostly books by NZ authors that you can't get here.

If your kids are at an International school, the school will generally have a library, and will lend books to the children for a week or so at a time.

Alternatively, books are one of the few things with no import duty, so I sometimes simply order them from Amazon. (Or buy when I happen to be in the UK, and take them back with me). If you buy a lot of books at once, and don't mind that they'll take a couple of weeks, Amazon's not a bad option.

There's a good 2nd hand english-language kids book shop in the Seri centre (top floor) - not a lot a people know that as Michael Caine might say.

For videos / cd's - best is to join and rent from BAMBI. http://www.bambiweb.org/

Or try this bookshop, they should be having another sale the end of June.

This looks so exciting!!

Not sure we will be in Bangkok in June though, might have to postpone our move till later.

How often do they have their sales?

There's a newish shop in Seri Center that sells used books and specializes in children's books. The name of the shop is called Angel Tomorrow. I've seen only their website (have not been to the store) but some of their selections look very good with some decent prices and the books look like they are in good condition. Angel Tomorrow is on the 3rd floor of Seri Center Shopping Mall and is open Tuesday-Sunday.

Most of their sites are in Thai language, but the first site shows some photos of their stock.

I hope this helps and good luck!

I always buy my kid's books in BKK, I find that the bookstore in the Paragon (not Asia Books) the Japanese-sounding one) has a good selection. And compared to at least Vietnam, where I live, books are cheap.

I've always found books to be cheaper in Viet Nam (Ha Noi) than here.

Only problem is not so much choice in English language books but lots in French.

True, they are cheap here but that doesn't do any good if there is no choice :o
