Hello All

Feeling altruistic. Was wondering if anyone knows of good (honest) charities in the BKK area or Thailand?

Specifically ones that help children; aids hospice for kids, kids with disabilities.

Cheers

The Mercy Center in Pattaya run by two Canadian Missionaries, rescues children who have suffered or are at risk of abuse. www.mercypattaya.com. Also the Father Ray Brennan Centre also known as the Pattaya Orphanage. Both organisations worthy of support IMHO.

Baan Gerda is an orphanage for HIV infected children that does an excellent job and provides more than the essential life-saving medication. I have visited their small village and was happy to offer my support. www.baangerda.org

What about in BKK area?

I checked out a long list of organisations in Bangkok Post.

Amazingly enough, 99% of them never returned my e-mail.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have ran into the same problems as Travel2003, basically no one from these organisations ever reply.

Check out this thread for Bangkok, specificly, Klong Toey.  Fr Joe Meier is one of the good guys!

Options For Donating Clothes/shoes - Thailand ForumI'm sure that Father Joe and his Klong Toey slum foundation/charity (Google 'Father Joe) can make great use of all donations. Failing that (and assuming ...

I read a book about klong toey a few years ago, sure it was by this guy? Can anyone confirm? Some very sad stories. Uplifting too at times. The book may have been called Slaughterhouse?

What are your interests? I organize charity bicycle rides through Thailand that benefit two worthy causes. Would you like to see Thailand, help others in need, and get some good exercise at the same time?Visit My Website Our beneficiaries are; Operation Smile Thailand - helping children who were born with cleft lip or cleft palate, and the Foundation for the Blind under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen.

Cheers,

Bike Thailand, thats a nice way to raise money for charities. Would love to go on a ride, but unfortunately trying to re-establish myself here in BKK and dont really have the time nor a bike nor the health and stamina :o

I did visit the massive orphanages at Pra Kred on the weekend though.

FYI only B$3500 can provide a meal for all the kids

sadly one has to be really careful when giving to any charity here in thailand.

Many will basicly give a little money to the needy, the rest goes into someones pockets.

In the tsunami we saw lots of examples of this-it goes on all over the place.

In another example a american lady came to check on an orphanage she was helping and unearthed a rip off scam.

So, please be careful.Good ones do exist .

Not sure about the Bangkok area. I worked at Baan Nana (Mae Sai) in January this year. Truly a genuine organisation that shelter street kids. Am moving to Bangkok in three weeks so it would be good to know of some myself actually!

I know it is not Bangkok - but have a look at the website:

www.care4kids.info

This is a Pattaya based charity and now is probably covering most of Chonburi.

Unfortunately it's very difficult to find any organisation which delivers much more that 17% of the money donated to its target.

I personally recommend you go out and meet extremely poor folk and make direct donations to them.

100% of your money will reach its target and you'll get personal satisfaction knowing those who you help.

Good luck with your endeavour.
