Anyone ever been to Koh Chang off the coast near Trat? Does it compare to Phuket? Seems nice from what I can see on the net.

I've been to Koh Chang on numerous occasions but never been to Phuket so I can't compare, there is a Koh Chang thread, you should get a better idea from that.

I personal enjoy going to Koh Chang as it's not very touristy and its a good place to chill away from the bright lights of the city.

There must be two Koh Changs. One is close to the Cambodian border.

If you read the OP you will see they are referring to the one of the coast of Trat.

There used to be a Koh Chang forum.

This has been replaced by the Eastern Thailand Fourm here.

There are various threads to be found on the subject of the island.

My two satang's worth: KC is much less developed and smaller, it attracts many backpacker types looking for The Beach experiance but still being in arms reach of a Starbucks.(Is there one on the island?)

There are some nicer 5 star hotels and some ropey places as well. Driving can be interesting there during the rain.

The beaches are free from motorized entertainment which is a blessing for the many small crabs that fill the beach.

Hi!

Just came back from Ko Chang 2 weeks ago.

I've travelled to all of the main islands now in Thailand and would put Ko Chang no higher than mid-table.

It is a big island (the 2nd biggest in Thailand) but is nowhere near as built up as some of the others i.e Phuket/Samui

However, due to its size you really need a bike to fully explore some of the island. You can get taxi's that are fairly frequent and have set rates to different parts of the island which is good. However, at night I would be cautious driving.......no road lighting in most parts and some very steep terrain makes it a bit dangerous.

Was a lot of Thai families there on holiday but while ever-present on the beach during the day no-where to be seen in the evenings. Restaurants were average and slightly pricy, bars were ok......no real clubs. Quite a few travellers/backpackers going to and coming from Cambodia. Accomodation available for all budgets, usual tourist tours and no aggressive touts trying to sell everything. The locals were lovely people and very friendly and all in all we had a great time there.

However, I wouldn't go back as its so far to get to unless you are going via that way. Ko Samet is in my opinion a much better option.

What exactly are you looking for though?

Cheers,

Emubob

hello, ive been to phuket(patong) and koh chang, If you like peace and quiet then its koh chang, most of the island is national park(jungle) with a stip all around the out side which is touristy, the beaches are nice when the tide is out(hardly any when the tide is in) I went there in december an the weather was really nice (not to hot) I went to phuket in feb and it was very hot, lovely beaches and more night life. personally i like both koh chang and phuket :D:o

Hi all,

thanks for your posts they are a help. I am a sucker for Phuket, and I feel like home when I'm floating in the Nai Harn swell, but I'm getting a bit concerned with all the murders/muggings/violence that is happening there frequently. Pretty much I can choose wherever I want to go in Thailand to stay for 5 months, and why would I go to Phuket when there is so much violence? I guess some of the quieter areas are not so bad....but a new post on a mugging in Rawai?? What is happening on this island....

I have a farung friend who has been living in Phuket for several years now and he said that although there has been previous times of violence in Phuket, Patong is getting worse and worse now. Ko Chang, or maybe even better Ao Nang (near Krabi) looks like it is going to be a good alternative. Chiang Mai is also desirable now that I think Phuket is having problems.

Correct me if I'm wrong
