I've searched around and come across some old threads on various parts of the renewal process but I want to get some up to date information and go through the processes.

Insurance questions

If you buy a vehicle on HP can you still move insurance company after the end of the first "free" year ?

If you have had a claim will that affect your ability to change ? Settled claim and non settled but agreed claim ?

If you bought the car up north does that create a problem getting the next insurance in Pattaya ?

Compulsory insurance questions

Do you still need to buy this if you have 1st class insurance ?

Where can you renew it ?

What documents do you need ?

Any difference if you bought it on HP and don't have the books ?

Car tax / plate tax questions

Where can you renew it ?

What documents do you need ?

Any difference if you bought it on HP and don't have the books ?

Please add any other questions and post up the answers to these as I reckon a lot of us could do with some guidance. I know I certainly need the help.

Having just done all this I will answer from my experiences. Not too sure if I am 100% correct on the paperwork required for tax/ compulsory insurance, but these are what I showed and had no problem.

Insurance questions

Yes, although they may tell you different - just ignore them

If you have had a claim will that affect your ability to change ? Settled claim and non settled but agreed claim ?

No, but may affect the premium :o

If you bought the car up north does that create a problem getting the next insurance in Pattaya ?

No.

Compulsory insurance questions

Do you still need to buy this if you have 1st class insurance ?

Yes, but you don't need the sticker anymore

Where can you renew it ?

Seems like anywhere that has some sort of car connection (dealers, garages etc). I did mine in the photcopy shop oppsite the DOLT in Pattaya.

What documents do you need ?

Your last year's papers

Any difference if you bought it on HP and don't have the books ?

No

Car tax / plate tax questions

Where can you renew it ?

Same as above, I did it in the same photocopy shop, but you can do it in your local DOLT offices if your prefer to queue.

What documents do you need ?

Last years tax papers.

Any difference if you bought it on HP and don't have the books ?

No.

Last year I had class 1 insurance for one year when I purchased my new Nissan Navara LE 4 X 2. I think it was around 21,000 baht. It is now renewal time and our local dealer is phoning my wife almost daily reminding us that the tax & insurance is expiring (a fact which I have been aware of for a few weeks !.)

They have asked for 19,780 baht. The tax is quite low as it is a two door pickup & the insurance is slightly less than first year.

Is this a good quote or too pricey? I have submitted a on line form to TV insurance and will wait & see.

The current insurer is Viriyah who I understand have a good reputation in Thailand.

That's in line with what I pay for a similar vehicle with the same Insurer. Maybe others can trim the premium but my experience of Virayah is that they were excellent when dealing with the few claims we had in the past.

At the end of the day, they're only as good as their claims handling.

First of all see how much is being covered. I bet a penny to a pound that you were only covered for 80% of the vehicle cost so if you smashed it up driving it off the forecourt you'd have lost 20% if written off !!!!!

You can get that up to 90% and in year 2 to 80% of the original value. The extra cost for the 10% increase is about Bt1000 a year. You may well be only covered for 70% or 60% this year !!!!!

Check if you have main dealer insurance or contract garage. Contract garage (approved) is significantly cheaper but any major work will head back to the main dealer anyway.

You were told your insurance was 21k last year. At nearly 20k this year they have not given you much of a no claims discount have they ? I'm not sure in LOS but I'd expect 20-30% reduction in premium as long as no accidents / claims and not including any premium increase due to inflation.

The tax and compulsory insurance is standard, just sort out your A1 / First Class insurance. If you haven't done so, ask the above questions and also state that you want Thai Visa to answer them as well.

Thanks T, I was aware of the 80% cover just forgot!.

Eventually paid:-

Road tax - 1050 Baht

Compulsory insurance - 970 Baht

Class 1 Insurance - 18,817 Baht

So a small reduction from last year.

It was done from a broker recommended by our friendly dealer!! in a small town up this way. The docs will be in the post soon.

I am particulary interested in what medical cover/assistance is provided by Viriyah in an accident etc, as I take out full Bupa cover for myself and wife every year.

Be wary of purchasing your tax/ compulsory insurance through 3rd party agents. My insurance company sent me a quote for everything, which when I broke it down included about 5,700 for tax and compulsory ins. I went to one of the shops opposite the transport office, and 5 minutes later had both for 1,600.

When I queried this later, I was told it was for 'administration costs' :o

Sounds good - what is your vehicle and age ?

So did you get the % cover increased or are you now driving around on about 60% coverage in the 2nd year ?
