From Yellow Stars to ID Cards – Then and Now In Nazi times, Jews wore yellow stars – big, clear, cruel. They were marked – for shame, for fear, for death. The star meant – "You are not one of us." It was forced – sewn on by law, backed by hate. Now – in Israel – every citizen carries an ID. Jew, Arab, Druze – all have them. The card lists your name, your birth, your number. Once – it also showed your group. That part was dropped in 2005. Still – the system knows if you're Jewish or not. Some say it matters – too much. Arab Israelis – one in five – can vote, work, live. But many say – they face less. Less funding. Less housing. Less voice. The ID card is civil – not hateful – but it still divides. It is not the yellow star – not even close. That star was for death. The card is for order. But both raise a sharp question – who belongs, and who doesn’t? Fairness needs watching – always. A label can start as a tool – and end as a wall. -
