According to The Public Relations Department National News Bureau Thailand

Phuket is voted to be the host venue for a world diving community meeting of CMAS in 2009

The Confederation Mondiale des Activities Subaquatiques or CMAS, which in English means World Underwater Federation, held a meeting in Egypt late May and agreed to select Phuket as host venue for its meeting in 2009 as proposed by local diving businesses operators. The information was released by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Phuket office director Suwalai Pinpradap who stated that the meeting will take place during April 21 – 25th, 2009, when the association also celebrates its 50th year anniversary. Suwalai stressed that the meeting will be beneficial to the region, particularly for the diving businesses, as the participants can explore or experience the local dive spots or products themselves. The meeting expects to see around 500 members from many diving businesses. The Andaman region earns around 3,000 million baht from the diving industry each year with Similan, Surin, Phi Phi and Lanta islands among famous diving spots.

They're going to be disappointed when they go diving!! :oNot a good idea for the dive business here I wouldn't have thought as word will get round pretty quickly that the dive sites are now second rate. Have to admit though, I haven't dived Surin or Lanta islands.
