Help Jay Get Back On Chat

Featured Replies

I miss Jay in the morning, on chat. What can we do to help him get back in the chat room.

Jay, tell us what is happening with your com-put-er and then maybe the techies can give some advice.

It cannot be that hard to rectify the problem :o

OK, this may sound a little ludditish, but here goes:

When I log on to O.F.C.S. I get the blank chat screen with the "hot cuppa tea" in the top left hand corner.

Then I get "Applet Client notinited" and the hot tea turns to a red cross.

Occasionally I get the "error: java.lang. ClassFormatError: default (Bad magic number)" return but not everytime.

Prior to upgrading at this end I was using a Acer 'pute, Celeron processor, 533 MHz with 84 MB RAM (56 usable) running Windows 98. Netscape 7.0 was my prefered browser.

Now I've upgraded to a Compaq 'pute, Pentium 4, 2.80 GHz with 256 MB RAM running Windows XP. Netscape 7.2 is my current browser.

Neither of these 'putes have been able to log on since the first chat upgrade (about a month ago). I am using CsLoxinfo ISP on dial up connection.

Thanks for your concern, Torn

Hi Jay,Hi Torn

As explained before,I also cannot enter the chat anymore using my compu at home.

As soon as I start, the received bytes stop! Going back to the main program they will start running again.

The last poll showed 5 out of 13 could not chat anymore.

I know I am not that popular as Jay but I also miss the morning sessions.

I can enter from my office but out of solidarity with Jay ,I will not.

Btw in 1 1/2 month I only can use my compu at home as I will retire.

I suppose if you help Jay , you also will help me.

Thanks for starting the topic again Torn.

Hi Dutch, I didnt realise you were also having trouble. Livinlos is a techie of sorts, maybe he can help?!, I will give him the password to get into VIP if that is allright?!

Who else can help here?

Hey, dutch! You don't have to stay off the O.F.C.S. just because I can't get in! Jasus, who is going to hold the fort for the "really" old farts?

I can't understand why the techies who degraded the chat can't come up with an answer. They, and only they, apparently, know what they did to 'improve' the chat so why can't they come up with any suggestions?

I don't think it's as easy as that Torn. In addition to knowing the password, I believe you need to be on "zee list" to be able to enter. Huski is the man to deal with on this one.

Jay,

I wait for you.I am the "O" of the OFCS you know? :D

Way too complicated for me when I read the link. But it is almost the end of the day :o

scroll down to the bottom and just do the auto install of java virtual machine... forget facking around with the microsoft one.

hi'

I'll try to connect today and I'll tell you :D

I run on one machine win xp sp2 on P4 ht 2.6ghz 1gb ram and use netscape 7.2 most of the time ... close to you yarenram ...

tell you soon about how it's for me :o

francois

well, got in within seconds :D

but no one there ...

a word about java though ...

update asap :o

francois

I would try re installing the latest version of java , because the chat is a java based chat.

you can d/load either microsoft java or sun java and then run the executable.

will look for some links and post them

:D

try starting here

Thanks for your advice, Stun. However, I downloaded the latest Java as suggested but to no avial. Still get the return "Applet Client notinited". Then it sits forever telling me that it's "Loading Java Applet". Apparently my "magic number" is no longer bad.

I am beginning to get paranoid!

:o

I now retract that last statement. I've just tried reloading and received "Applet Client inited", but then I'm back to my "Bad magic number". Surely somebody out there in cyberworld can give me a "Good magic number"? Or is everyone as thick as me?

Could it be the built in firewall which is automatically turned on with WinXP SP2?

Try disabling it temporarily then accessing OFCS. If it works, you need to allow outbound access to the port used by the Java Chat app.

Could anybody else give more precise instructions on how to disable the firewall in XP? I'm runing Win2K Pro here.

Disabling the firewall in Windows XP:

1. Click on Start, click on Control Panel, then click Network Connections.

2. Right click on LAN (Local Area Network), click on 'Advanced' tab.

3. Click on Settings. The window "Windows Firewall" opens.

4. Check Off (not recommended).

Repeat the above procedure for all the connections you use for connecting to the Internet. (some of the Windows terms I use here may be slightly different in reality from those used in my version here, since I run the Swedish version of XP pro).

Thanks for your advice, MS. However, although I'm now able to get "Applet Client inited" but I still get the "Bad Magic Number" error return.
