Hi,

i'm newly arrived in Bangkok and taking up residence in Thong Lo. I'm a professional Brit. formaly in the restaurant/hotel business applying for retirement.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced, friendly bar/pub with fellow expats. If another bar girl says to me "Hello, what your name?" again, i'm going to freeking scream! :-)

Anywhere on Sukhumvit or i would be willing to travel further. Rather defeats the title of local i know, but hey! i'm desperate!

Hi Russian Robert,

Try “Cheap Charlies” bar, Sukhumvit - Soi 11. This is a well attended hang out for falangs and although the décor is poor the bar girls know that they should keep away from the patrons. Cheers!

Cheers guys, any more suggestions?

EVOLUTION sukhumvit 107 soi bearing 8 good english food icy cold beer and all sports covered (its also my brothers bar) ex newcastle been here many years have a look David & pepsie

Went to Evolution on Monday night about ten pm or so but sadly closed already- maybe Monday is half-day closing. Still, plenty of Thai bars on Soi Bearing, so did not go home thirsty.

I think the Offshore Bar on Sukhumvit 23ish (East end of Soi Cowboy) sells draught Newcastle Brown, which is another common feature it has with several other justifiably empty bars around the world.

Bullys at Nana or the Bulls Head opposite the Emporium (Great Fish & Chips) always pop in when I am in Bangers as I live in Phuket has John Smiths on Draught as well and a good bit out the front cooled by Vapour if you need a fag, its round the corner from the Robin Hood which is So So

Funnily enough, as an old fogey ex-pat from England who likes his quiet pint, I'm none too keen on Sukhumvit, preferring Silom for the vibe. Less "in your face", I feel. Try Duke of Wellington (Silom Road, just down from CP Tower) and Molly Malones (Thanon Convent) when you're up that way.

And a bit further afield I've always enjoyed the food and (limited selection) beer at the Saxophone, Victory Point.

Sorry for the off-topic question, but since the conversation seems to have drifted towards Silom, I was wondering if the Toby Jug Pub was still around? I think it's near the Sala Daeng BTS station on Silom Rd. I was there four or five years ago and it seemed like a nice, relaxing place to get a pint, with friendly folks to talk to. The owner was Thai and speaks English quite well.

Cheers,

Some of my favorite pubs:

Soi 8 Pub on Sukhumvit Soi 8, 50 meters into the Soi on the left. Nana BTS Station. It is a Kiwi Bar, no bargirls, owner is a great guy. Free Wifi too and reasonably priced food and drinks.

Barbican on Soi Thaniya, near Sala Daeng BTS, in the middle of Japanese Karoake bars, but Barbican is very nice, bit upscale pub.

Dubliner on Sukhumvit 22.

Londoner is great on happy hour or Wed night when happy hour all night, but can be a bit pricey.

Bulls Head already covered.

Also in Silom area are O'Reilly's right at the Sala Daeng BTS on Thaniya.

Molly Malone's on Soi Convent.

Witches Tavern on Thonglo already covered, love that place, especially on Wed nights since it is ladies night and they drink free until 9pm.

Sherbet is nice but the standard for the girls dropped quite badly since the last time i been there. You can go there for drinks and have the option to have or not to have a girl accompany you. They have a great band too...

I'll add my voice to Witches' Tavern on Thong Lor (just south of Soi 10).

No nonsense, pub-style, pint of draught Heineken 170Bt, good happy hour on bottled Heineken from 4-7 (or thereabouts). A few unobtrusive TV screens showing sport, live band some nights from about 9pm.

For me,, the Offshore bar (end of cowboy next to the chip shop) far and away the best boozer in town.

On that note, off the the fridge for a bottle of dog...

I find that place so unfriendly.

It reminds me of a small country bumpkin place with the locals in the corner, sneering and going "You're not from round ere' are you, city boy?"
