Mini Trip Report ....

Headed out for a Saturday morning ride today and was doing OK with my navigation at first, finding the Sukhothai for afternoon tea, McD's for lunch and the Yamaha dealers up near the Elephant building for some parts. Then decided that there must be a better route home to Ekamai rather than retracing my steps - so headed 'off piste' down Ratchada Phisek which should have taken me to Asok.

Seemed to go well to Fortune Town, but then after seeing signs for Don Muang for a second time I knew I'd gone really wrong.

Stopped to ask some motorsai lads the way to Ekamai, and after trying to give directions one offered to lead the way so I could follow.

What a buzz! Wrong way up a couple of streets, overpasses I'd never used before, little back roads not wide enough for cars. I even saw Britbike flash by at one point (must find my way back there). He was skilled at bike control but never once looked back to perform a 'life-saver', whereas I was spinning my head around like a WW2 fighter pilot as we zapped between cars and u-turned off the main roads. I think his strategy was that if he accelerated fast enough between the cars, then what's behind is irrelevant?

My 135cc versus his 125cc just gave me the edge so I could hold back to see where he was going, plan then catch up again.

Don't think I'll do it again .... but for the 100 baht I gave him it was a roller-coaster tour of Bangkok.

I had a look at a map when I got back - and his route was pretty direct but not one I could ever retrace.

In my youth that was known as the rabbit 'n' hounds. Played the game many a time. Gets the adrenalin pumpin' once the coppers get in on the game!

Good post, I love it how some Thai guys ride there little bikes. Once I asked a motorbike taxi if he can show me the way to an address.... He on Honda Wave (cannot remeber 100 or 125) and me on a BMW G650 Xmoto, I had a hard time to keep up with the guy....
