MaiChai
Don't need to get it unlocked; just buy a prepaid SIM in TL. I have done this with quite a few Cellnet/O2 mobiles over the years (4 different phones). Suspect Vodaphone, etc will be the same. Even if you do have a problem, mobiles are pretty cheap now in LOS; not the way it used to be.

george
My personal choice is AIS. http://www.ais900.com or their pre-paid service http://www.one-2-call.com DTAC and Orange are in the second division, especially outside Bangkok. If you plan to use GPRS, don't choose DTAC, their GPRS is much slower and unstable compared to AIS.
buasaard
DTAC and Orange are in the second division, especially outside Bangkok. Maybe it was once. This year in January I bought two sim cards in Phuket (DTAC and Orange) for me and my wife. We travelled by car south to Malaysia and then north to Petchaboon province. Lost signal only for a 50 Km while heading north in the Petchaboon province.
