I can't get it to load just now, but I have a feeling that it could be fascinating even for those on the run...........

Interesting, but when i typed my surname in it keeped coming up with an error

hmmm...the page is currently performing a major update...more traffic than they were able to handle methinks....

I opened it ok. Seems correct when looking at the areas where my surname surfaces. England, East Midlands (where I'm from ) has the most, followed by North America & Aus / NZ. :o

I already know where my maiden name originates. A village of the same name in North Yorkshire, a tiny little place that consists of about 3 houses. :o

Seems this site just shows you where the concentrations of your family name are, rather than its origins. Ancestry.com has something similar: name distribution in the learning center, but a tad more historical.

Yep, thought so..... quite a few family members moved to Australia a few years back...... looks like they bred like rabbits.

Has anyone tried to put in a commmon name? I put in 'Murphy', my word, Murphy was a prolific bugger! :o

looks like, since the BBC article, they had massively increased traffic and had to boost their servers.

Honestly, who said publicity was a good thing?

The (tax paid) BBC post a (tax-paid) article and now the poor (Tax paid) researchers have to fork out thousands of (tax-payers) pounds, for better servers...

Oh, remind me.. why do taxes keep going up?

:o

It's called inflation, or the wage price spiral, you substitute tangible goods for non tangible goods, one day one potato is worth one carrot or one piece of paper, and then the next day your one potato only gets you three quarters of a carrot as the man with the carrots needs two potatoes to get a turnip.

Every time any transaction occurs, at least one party (but usually both) want to make a profit, carrots, potatoes, turnips or little bits of paper, it matters not .... taxes increase because of man's insatiable greed..... and I am not talking about making billions of 'pick your currency' just the basic need of having more today than you did yesterday..... and it's unstoppable.

Taddy - the chancellor of the exchequer! :o
