Lies, dam_n lies and statistics.

That just about sums it up. Above a certain value the human brain trips out. We all can visualise ten, a hundred, a thousand of virtually anything. But when you start getting into the tens of thousands the brain just shuts down. Turning large numbers into a visual representation makes them more human.

But the real challenge is to get sufficient people to care sufficiently to actually do something about this waste of resources. Unfortunately his work, I fear, is doomed to the "oh that's interesting" coffee table publications.

could they do one for the number of corrupt acts by polliticains and goverment employees every day in Thailand ... not sure what the main image would be and what they would use to make the image???
