Pickpockets On Sukhumvit (nana Bts Area)

Walking down towards Soi 4 last night, around midnight, just before the Landmark and was approached by 2 kids 'selling flowers' (one looked about 9 and the other 14) The youngest came up, pushed his flowers into my chest and gave his sales patter whilst dipping his hand into my front jeans pocket.

First time had anything attempted like this, and got to say I was shocked! grabbed his hand, gave it a gentle squeeze and said "tam arai nong?" he backed off saying 'arai, arai, mai dai tam arai...'

Then through shock/anger, lost all ability to speak thai and gave him a dressing down in english, much to his bewilderment, I'm sure...

Obviously, he didn't manage to get anything, but my wad of notes (around 2000b) was half out.

I wonder how many people they've done already...

A very dangerous area, I got pickpocketed there a few years ago.

I was walking past the police box at the end of Soi 4 just after the bars had closed. There were two Katoey and a girl, one of the katoey blocked my way"where are you going, stop and talk with us..." and grabbed my t-shirt. I pulled free of them, realised that my wallet was gone, but by the time I turned around, both the katoey had vanished. The girl denied ever having seen them.

I only lost a couple of thousand baht, it was having to cancel my credit cards that really irritated me.

I have heard of other people having a similar experience in that area.

I think one of these threads on the flower selling pickpocket gangs should have a sticky by now since a new one seems to pop up every few weeks.

After all, they are stealing money that is intended for the fine establishments in the area.

OP and JYY… they are just kids. Lucky u not meet a crew or something out targeting people, if u worry little kids so much.. Install some zips on your pockets. And easy accuse money belt. Or sometimes when need to carry large amounts of cash past 200K I will just wear a undershirt passport holder, with a lose shirt or jacket.

The point is to stay cool and stay on topic. This is a serious subject and yet after a couple of good posts everyone is calling each other names like schoolkids.

The lower Sukhumvit area is notorious for katoey pickpockets late at night, but this is the first time I've heard of kids being involved. For many years - a long time ago - I was stumbling around that area after midnight and never had a single encounter. In recent years, when I'd head for TGIF to eat around 8pm I'd have some katoey say "helloooo" on the footbridge near Soi 1, but I was never accosted.

When I was in India I'd find 7 or 8-year-old kids with their hands in my pockets on a main street in broad daylight. There's not a lot you can do, though, except keep your eyes open and don't put your money in a loose pocket.
