A British woman is "very upset" after effectively being told by police she looked like a man.

Pauline Synnott, 59, was snapped speeding 19km over the limit on a road in Gillingham, Kent, and got in touch with police expecting to pay a fine, British tabloid The Sun reported.

But officers looking at the speed camera photo refused to believe Ms Synnott had been behind the wheel.

They sent a letter to her partner of 12 years and owner of the car, Roy Watkins, asking him to confirm the identity of the driver.

It read: "From the copy of the photograph it appears that the driver was a male".

Mr Watkins insisted his wife was the driver and said he was "fuming" over police handling of the affair.

"Pauline is very upset — any woman would be if they were told they look like a man," he was quoted as saying in the newspaper.

"I want compensation for the misery and hurt this has caused."

A spokesperson for Kent Police said authorities had contacted the couple to settle the issue.
