New York (dpa) - Hollywood legend Paul Newman has died at the age of 83, the actor's charitable organisation Newman's Own Foundation reported Saturday.

"We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person," the foundation said in a statement.

The Oscar-winning actor and philanthropist died Friday after a long battle with lung cancer, the foundation said. He is survived by his wife, actress Joanne Woodward, and five daughters, two of them from an earlier marriage. A son, Scott, died in 1978.

He was a quality human being and the world is a poorer place with his passing.

According to his biography the Paul Newman's own sauce was started as a joke. The company was set up so that all profits were donated to charity - that totalled 220 million dollars. He has been a long time fan in the US of motor racing for NASCAR and open wheel divisions - again they were done for fun but he managed to make them profitable and successful which is a rare feat, especially for a privateer.
