I am still reading about certain products that are tainted with melamine. If these products (which a great deal are consumed by children including my own) are really dangerous why has the government or the producer/supplier not taken them off the shelf??

Please don’t tell me this is some kind of cover up / conspiracy to protect trade relations with China…..

Cheers

well if you know they are on the shelf, don`t buy em.

my point is I dont know if they are tainted or not. In the papers 'Thai mothers are in a panic' over claims that certain food products are dangerous. I'm not going to stop buying products if there is nothing wrong with them......but when i research this on the web I find mixed opinions......can anybody shed any light?

Any TV members stopped buying certain food products and if so why?

If the public have stopped buying certain products, then why is the supplier not assuring them that they are safe......is this just a blind panic that i suspect it is!?

Apparently, the dairy issue came to the attention of Chinese officials in July. With the Olympics in August, I think you can now understand why the situation was managed as it was. Unfortunately, this allowed a significant amount of tainted dairy products to enter the food chain.

The sad reality is that food product labeling in Thailand does not require a statement of ingredient origins. A consumer is not allowed to make an informed purchase decision. The same comment can be made about food products sourced in Australia, Canada etc.

Pick up a candy bar and it may say made in Australia, but you don't know if the whey powder or flavourings were sourced from Korea or China. Same same for Thailand.

I know what you mean, but to be honest, it seems like everything else in Asia, you pay your money and take your chances!

China has had problems with fake/tainred baby milk going back at least 6 or 7 years....anything for a dollar, even dead babies!

It would seem TV member are much more concerned or interested in the alcohol ban topic. I guess this so called 'panic' about tainted food goods is a load of hot air!

My guess is , there are more posters on TV driven by alcohol availability than about the food they consume , the only thing i personally can suggest is , do not purchase ANY food stuff that has the slightest connection with China , this will eliminate many of your fears . I have not purchased Chinese food items for probably 6 months now and will continue NOT to do so , you have to view the whole area of the packaging because sometimes there is only a few words in Chinese , put it back on the shelf .

From my understanding melamine is not any more dangerous than common table salt. It's when melamine is mixed with cyanuric acid that makes it deadly. Or of course when melamine is in extremely high doses. But most all foods have some level of melamine.

In other words, those members are satisfied with the food quality, feel safe, and can get it anytime of the day/night.

:D

On the other hand, alcohol has been a topic since this Minister (a few years ago) intoduced the early closing hours because he thought that would remove the bad image Thailand has. Resulting in Thailand having among the earlyest closing hours in the world, and the opening of all the underground/illegal night clubs.

This issue of tainted food is also being discussed in the Health section of TV.

As mentioned, it's very hard to know what could be contaminated and what isn't. I would stick with fresh milk products, which are produced locally. It's a good time to limit the amount of candy and snack foods with milk or milk products like cakes, cookies etc.

Depending on the age of your kids, I wouldn't be too afraid of the occasional candy bar, but I would make it a real treat instead of a staple. Some things you might want to stay away from is chocolate candy bars and ice cream.

My concern is that contaminated products and milk powder may have made it into the country and with a little bit of 'tea money' may be used in food products. Money probably trumps safety.

I don't think you need to panic, but care and caution are in order.
