What is the official maximum limit of THB that can be sent out of the country via bank transfer?

And is that limited per month, or could the maximum amount be transfered multiple times in one month?

Any experiences or knowledge sharing on this would be helpful.

Thai Baht, not Thai Baht equivalent? The answer to that one is 50,000 baht at one time. I suppose you may be able to repeat the process but the BOT really doesn't want to see THB sent overseas so you will have problems sooner or later. Sending foreign currency overseas is a different story, much easier - it's then a very simple process to but THB in say Hong Kong et al.

Following on from chiang mai then, should we convert THB to dollars or sterling first? If so, any idea of the limit per transfer?

Maximum transfer of foreign currency out of Thailand is USD $20,000 or the equivalent thereof, in any single transfer without supportive paperwork. You can repeat the process until the bank(s) get tired of seeing you and they or the BOT ask what you are up to. You can also buy Sterling or USD cashiers cheques from Bangkok Bank, drawn on their overseas offices (London and New York) and courier them to the UK or US and deposit them into a local account - three days clearing time. As to which currency you should chose that depends on what your end currency is - I'm betting USD will be a more profitable bet than GBP between now and the end of the year, but, up to you!
