I know... two questions in one day might be asking too much, but I do appreciate each of you who can spare the time to share your expertise.

My question is: Can I change my last name while on a Non-O?

My husband is Thai, we were married here and have resided here for the last few months and will continue to reside here until about July. I am currently on a non-O visa. I will be heading back the U.S. next week and would like to change from my maiden to my married name. However I am not sure how this will affect my visa status. If it is too much of a hassel I will wait until next year when we move back to the U.S. I just thought someone where might have some advice/experience to pass on.

Thanks in advance,

Noi and Joe

It depends on whether you are talking about a 1 year extension or a non-o visa.

If you are only talking about changing your name while in the states for lets say a drivers license it would not be a problem in either case.

Changing your name on your passport is where the problem could arise since unless your passport is less than a year old you will need to get a new passport. See the following link for more info.

Also remember that to do anything in the states (or here at the US conulate) that requires a copy of your marriage certificate you will need a translated copy that has been certified by the Ministry of Forign Affairs.

Don't forget to get a re-entry permit when you travel to the states, unless you have a multiple non-O. Here the problem lies if you get a new passport. If you get a new passport you will need to have immigration transfer the stamps to your new passport, which is free. But you are outside Thailand, making it more complicated. You will probably be alright when you can show both passports (old and new) but not sure. In this scenario immigration at the airport will transfer the stamps for you they will have to cooperate for that. If you get a new non-O in the states then no problem.

Can't you change the name in your passport at the embassy in BKK? Might be easier.
