On Friday Night we joined Traffic Police at a checkpoint set-up on the Sukumvit Road in South Pattaya.

Cars, trucks and motorbikes were checked and special attention was paid to drivers suspected of being over the legal alcohol limit.

This is the first of many regular checkpoints in the run-up to the New Year Period here in Pattaya which normally sees an influx of tourists from other parts of Thailand who come to celebrate the well-known Pattaya Countdown Festival.

Police Colonel Sarayut, the Chief of Pattaya Police told us that these checkpoints are essential to ensure that criminals from out of town are prevented from coming to Pattaya and road accidents caused by drunk drivers are reduced.

We understand that on Friday Night, 20 cars were seized and the drivers detained and 30 motorbikes, many of which had been illegally modified were seized and the drivers detained for further questioning.
