Having done my 90 days border run this week I was warned by the Immigration post "only dollars are exepted at Tachileik" so I bought 5$ of them rate 50 baht one dollar (bank +/- 40 baht) but I was to lazy to go back so I don't accuse Imm. of overcharching because you can walk back to one of the many banks in Mae Sai.

Thanks Immigation staff for warning me I proberly would have to pay a lot more on the Myanmar side. :D

Asking at the Tachileik post why they don't accept Thai money anymore the answer was "we want $$$$$. :o

Sounds like a nice little scam to me.

Selling $ at 50 baht each.

A nice little insult to Thailand as well, saying our currency is not accepted.

I suspect the reasoning is not to snub Thailand, but to get more greenback US dollars into the hands of the junta in Rangoon. Has the US treasury practically forbid American imports into Myanmar?

Actually, I was at Tachilek on Saturday, and the Thai immigration booth was making a profit. They sold me a US$5 bill for 250 baht. Do I recall correctly that was the old price, 250 baht each, to pay in Myanmar? If so, we border crossers pay the same old price. If so, it's the generals in Rangoon who are losing 20% on the fx.

He had a whole box of $5 bills. Seemed happy.
