I use CSloxinfo to access the web. normally no problems and then as of yesterday morning problems.

The modem dials the number, pssword and user number are sent and accepted and I am on-line. however when i try to open a browser either Microsoft IE or Slimbrowser each page shows as being unavailable. "server down" or "temporarily unavailable"

Now i know this not to be true.

So can anyone shed any light on my problem?

Any thoughts would be most appreciated

My first guess would be your proxy/firewall settings, but I need more info. Is it all sites? How are you getting to here? What kind of connection are you on? What OS are you using?

One thing this reminds me of is a corrupt tcp stack. You can connect, but you won't go anywhere. Try these:

Set up a new connection with identical settings as the one thats not working and try connecting again. (dailup)

Run winipconfig and select "renew all" (dsl)

Many thanks cdnvic for the reply.

I am now using another PC away from home hence my ability to access this site.

On the home pc which using Windows ME as OS I can obtain a dial up connection with CSloxinfo no problem but can not access any site on opening my browser.

i will only be able to try out your suggestion upon returning home

Not only your proxy setting can produce this but also the lack or change of your DNS servers.

Have look look at your isp website to see what your dns servers need to be.

They come as ip adresses, like 128.254.232.1 or similar.

Then type winipcfg in a dos box , this will give you a window where you can see your network setting. check dns entry to see if they are correct. you have to select your moden connection in the window if you have a network card also

Would agree with cdnvic. My first suspicion is the firewall.

You may want to try this test:

While offline, shut firewall down completely.

Then with browser window closed, go online.

Now launch browser, and check to see if it loads the "home page" you've selected.

If you are now able to "surf", disconnect from ISP and do a complete shutdown.

Now, do a restart but boot into "SafeMode".

Again, do a full shutdown. DO THIS 3 TIMES, each time booting into "SafeMode".

Now do a normal shutdown/restart, allowing Windows to boot into normal mode.

Connect to ISP with browser closed.

Launch browser and see if it loads "home page".

Post back results to above tests, if additional assistance needed.

cheers

Windows98/98SE/ME have a few of the very early "driver repair capabilities", which Microsoft later expanded and built into Win2k, IE6 and WinXP. To activate those capabilities in Win98x one needs to work from "SafeMode" (where drivers are not loaded).

If you have the opportunity, try it. You'll find it often fixes "strange" little problems.

Merry Christmas :D
