January 3, 200917 yr I have a older Toshiba laptop that now has a dead battery. I can no longer get the laptop to power up using the adapter/charger. Is this normal? Does my battery need to have some juice left in it in order to run my computer using the adapter/charger? Any and all advice helping me correct the problem would be much appreciated. Thank you

Thank you this is not normal, all laptops perfectly run without a battery if connected to their charger, use a multimeter to see which voltage is going out of it.
January 4, 200917 yr this is not normal, all laptops perfectly run without a battery if connected to their charger, use a multimeter to see which voltage is going out of it. I've come across a few that won't run with a dead battery installed (ran ok with the battery removed) and a (very) few that won't run without a battery installed (an old IBM IIRC). If you've not already tried, take the battery out and see if it runs, does your power brick have a light, does it come on? "I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"
