Chaiyan said he isn't surprised by the contents of Red Siam Manifesto because he has worked with Giles and knows his attitudes and political standing.

Exactly. Giles is just exploiting the current situation to put himself in spotlight, for eyar no one has ever paid him any attention, but now he has a red wagon to jump on to.

Giles as a Marxist will also regard the current economic disaster as potentially the death knell for world capitalism that was prdicted by Marx etc - an increasing number of economic crises each of whihc is far worse than the last caused by the inherent contradcitions of capitalism. As such Giles probably is identifying the conditions for revolution and applying that to Thailand. Oh and making sure he is at the forefront of it.

Time will tell but as much as marxist analysis has been a fairly good critique of capitalism it has never delivered the goods yet on effective revolutionary change and people's paradise and capitalism for all its faults has proven to be very resilient, so Giles may be waiting a little longer before he is leading the masses in a charge down ratchadamnoen avenue. In the mean time I guess he is better insulated financially than most of those he left behind in Thailand...... How many truly poor socialists and revolutionaries have there actually been and how many people's movements have actually ever come form the people rather than from above? And in there lies the contradiction of imposed socialism it is just done by an elite that can never know the people.

Ousted Thai PM Thaksin says in Dubai

HONG KONG (AFP / 1 hour ago) — Ousted Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, whose whereabouts have been unknown for some time, said Thursday he was currently in Dubai.

Speaking to the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Hong Kong via video-link, Thaksin said he had also been offered passports by the leaders of several countries after Thailand made threats to revoke his citizenship.

"(The leaders) worry about me and have offered the passport of their country to me, to help protect me," he said. "I thank them and do not accept their passport because I still believe in my citizenship of being Thai."

Twice-elected Thaksin was ousted in a 2006 and was sentenced in absentia in October to two years in prison for abuse of power linked to a 2003 land deal. On Thursday, he again denied any wrongdoing in the case.

Since his ouster, Thaksin has hopped around the world making few public appearances. His travels included a brief stint as the owner of English football club Manchester City.

He was originally scheduled to appear in person in Hong Kong, but cancelled his trip after Thailand threatened to seek his extradition, even though there is no extradition treaty between them.

Current Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva vowed last week that his government would use "every means we can" to have Thaksin extradited to serve his prison sentence.

The man couldn't tell the truth even if he wanted to. He's a manipulative liar, telling people whatever he thinks will make himself look good according to the audience. From his interview with the Far Eastern Economic Review:

"Mr. Thaksin says he has been offered and accepted passports from other countries that he declined to name. “Probably I better not mention the names of those countries, but I have several documents,” he says, adding that he always travels on his Thai passport. It’s a standard passport, not a diplomatic one, he adds".

Ex-PM to return if democracy's back

Convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said he will return to Thailand once democracy and righteousness are restored in the country.

While speaking in Dubai to the Foreign Correspondents' Club in Hong Kong via video conference on Thursday, Thaksin said he has always been loyal to the royal institution ever since he was prime minister and until now.

When asked how he would deal with the country's economic downturn, the ex-premier said he is ready to do anything for his beloved country, but he has not been given the opportunity.

He's a marginal figure with no political base.I tend to agree he's using the Red movement as a band wagon.Where I differ slightly is that I don't think he's into self promotion, just another lefty academic and I concede probably a decent human being. He'll be in his element in the crazy oddly ill-informed bunch of low level British academics I read about in New Mandala.I see that lunatic Jones (his explanations for his attempted censorship of Khun Abhisit are richly comic) has had his letter to the President of St John's Oxford published in the Nation.

telling people whatever he thinks will make himself look good

I know another boy who always says nice things such as "I'll make the laws become laws", "I'm the PM of every Thai".

I have never listened to his tv talk on Sunday on NBT because I know he only talks smooth nice things to please people's ears.

That's Abhisit.

Exiled PM Asks Supporters to Help Bring Him Home

The exiled Prime Minister asked his supporters to help him return to Thailand during his phone-in last night in the Northeast. The exiled PM also said he believes he can solve the country's problems.

Last night, red-shirt protesters in Ubon Ratchathani Province, led by Prayoon Moonsan , held a dinner party to raise funds for its anti-government campaign. Key leaders of the red-shirt group Weng Tojirakarn and Nutthawat Saikua took turns to attack the Abhisit government.

In the phone-in, exiled former PM Thaksin Shinawatra accused the Abhisit administration of being unreliable and vowed to disclose his adversaries’ wrongdoings in his phone-ins next Thursday and Saturday.

Thaksin also said that Thailand would no longer experience poverty if he were in Thailand because he has prepared a budget of 250 billion baht for poverty eradication.

Thaksin added that he believes people are suffering now because Thailand is inundated by powerful people.

Thaksin also asked people to support the Pheu Thai Party and said he believes people's power could help bring him home.

He also offered his assurances that if he is allowed back into Thailand, he will work for the country and recover Thailand’s prestige, despite some groups lack of support.

He has 'prepared a budget' no doubt. 250 billion baht. How much will help the poor at the end of the line? :o

He is really a good believer of people sufferings. Did he think of how much conflicts and unrest he create with each phone-in?

Isn't that sufferings? :D

Thaksin to phone in on March 26 again

The former PM Thaksin Shinawatra spoke through the mobile Truth Today talk show held in Chiang Mai yesterday (March 22nd) that he would be revealing his plans believed to help tackle the economic problem on March 26.

The mobile Truth Today talk show was held yesterday (March 22) in Chiang Mai with a large crowd of the Red-Shirt Group’s supporters. During the show, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra phoned in via the video link system to elaborate his thoughts and views on the current economic problem.

He asserted that he did not agree with the government’s foreign loans scheme, worrying that it could lead the nation to further debt problem like what happened to Thailand prior to Mr. Thaksin’s government.

Thereby, the former Prime Minister affirmed that on March 26, he would be phoning in to the show, which would be held in the capital, again in order to reveal what should be done in order to overcome economic crisis.
