Hello,

I had to exchange my full passport today with the German embassy. I am currently on a non immigrant 'o' and im still in my 90 days. Since my VISA in my old Passport is valid until Sep 09 and I have Multiple entries, I am not ready for the etxension yet.

But, do I have to go to Immigration and have my entry stamp transfered into the new passport ? Or is it enough to show the old Passport which has the entry stamp, together with the new passport at the airport, when departing for my next 90 days ?

I also got a letter from the embassy confirm that I had been issued a new passport.

Better to just go to immigration and have your stamps transfered. It is free and doesn't take long.

You will need to carry both old and new passport, till the visa expires, as they won't transfer a visa. This is never a problem.

This is not correct, my visa from 2001 was transferred to my new passport (2007) along with the current extension to stay at the time which co-incidently was 1 month prior to extension expiry date - my extension to stay for another 12 months was also done at the same time.

Immigration will not transfer Visas. They only transfer Immigration Stamps.

Your Visa from 2001 must have been long expired.

Your visa was expired.

They will not transfer a valid visa.

My actual passport start with a "transfered visa". A tourist one, but still! I had 1 month left.

I remember I have done that at Suan Plu, quickly and for free.

(Honestly, I have been carrying the old one with me, in case :o )

Artisi and DTiger, I believe you are both mixing up visa on the one hand and permission to stay on the other hand. See here for an official explanation of the difference:

www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/content/visaxpiredate.html

If your visa was valid for one entry only it was used up and therefore no longer valid when you arrived in Thailand. It was of no further use to you. What you needed in your new passport to leave Thailand, or show in your old passport if you did not have the stamp transferred, was the arrival stamp, ie the stamp giving you permission to stay in Thailand for a specific number of days.

People on an extension of stay and/or with a valid re-entry permit in the old passport need to get those transferred to the new passport.

I stand corrected, after carefully studying studying the detail entered into my new passport I see that it is actually the detail of my intial entry based on the visa I had at the time together with the first extension of stay and the extension of stay current at the time I presented my new passport to immigration.

Wow Guys :o

So let me sumarize. I do not have to go to immigration. Just show also the old passport with the arrival stamp ( 90 days ) upon leavin by air at the airport. When comming back, I also show the old passport because of the VISA.

Correct ?

No, you have to go to immigration and they will transfer some stamps to your new passport. They want to have the enter and exit stamp in the same passport. But they will probably also do it at the airport without any problem.

Correct ?

Correct in both cases.

It is your choice.

Remember though that your new passport will not show your entry and permit to stay. So you would need both passports at all times to show if it was asked for by a person with that authority.
