Ive got a nearly new Flat screen CTR TV, thats not used, it would make a good PC monitor,

I was wondering if possible to connect my netbook which has a small 15 pin D sub monitor VGA port to my Flat screen CRT TV , which I think the sockets are called '' phono '' , I know that monitors are not too expensive but it would be nice to use this TV as its just sitting in a cupboard :o

No, you can't!

CRT televisions can't handle the resolution of vga outputs.

You can hook up your TV set through a videocard with a video-out signal, but you will not be able to read anything except very big fonts.

You can use this set-up to watch for example video's played from your PC.

Flatscreen LCD or plasma screen can handle the higher resolutions, hence they will have a regular VGA connector to receive signals from your PC...

Well, I have such a converter, and even if I set my videocard at 800 by 600 resolution (the lowest it will go) it is still very hard to read regular fonts due to the lack of pixels on the CRT tube...

I kind of wanted to say that you can't use the television set to replace a 21" monitor running at 1024 by 768 pixels even though you'd reason the much bigger TV set should be able to handle that :o

Agree with Monty (I have one too, no longer used as we have a big LCD).

Fine for watching videos, useless for text.

You can likely pick up a used CRT monitor for the cost of the converter.

Yes, I agree with both Monty and you in that respect of usability as a monitor for text, just forgot to add that caveat to my original post. :o

I was really thinking of general use with my netbook, so now its off to the IT mall to look for a some thing on a promotion :o

Making a PC output go into composite is possible but whats the point.. Composite NTSC is 480i so 240p.. Like the res of a PDA.. All text will be muddy, everything blurry, etc..

However if the set takes Hidef component inputs (or even 480p) you can convert VGA to component.. Its something for uber geeks and not normal people why want an easy life but it is possible.

VGA is RGBHV (red green blue horizontal and vertical) analog component which is one of the many forms of component.. The TV set will be YPbPr component where the chroma and luma are split out to reduce data redundancy that exists in the RGBHV signal. You can purchase boxes that will perform this conversion. Curt sells one here http://www.curtpalme.com/TC2000.shtm but making the output the correct type of signal will only be the first part of the battle.

The second is that the display (TV) will not be a multi resolution compatible device (like a PC monitor) it will only accept and display some subset of resolutions that the TV likes (480i, 480p, 576i, 567p and maybe 720p, 1080i or 540p) to make the PC output these TV like frequencies you can use a tool called powerstrip. This can set totally custom timing and resolutions including all kinds of uber technical things like a resolution within a resolution by defining porches (this makes windows operate withing a smaller panel than the signal truly is to counteract the overscan most sets have).

Basically this is possible but only if your a real PC geek, and very interested in video details. I used to install those old 3 gun CRT systems back before we had cheap and easy digital projectors and so all this kind of stuff was required understanding. For a normal user, just go buy a new TV !! Or buy a device that will playback your PC content onto the TV (popcorn media hour, xbox360, etc).

Aaah, brings back memories of Barco, Belgian company which I think was a pioneer in those 3 gun CRT projectors.

Nightmare to get them tuned for perfect picture quality :o

I've connected my PC to TV thru' a PC-TV converter. There are 2 outputs on the converter - a phono-style yellow connector which connects to a video-input on the TV (ignore the audio obviously) and s-video (which I haven't tried 'cos I haven't got a lead long enough).

The converter is about 500bht made by DTech and plugs into a USB port for power. Bought it from IT City (Tukcom) in Pattaya.

As said in a previous post - it's acceptable for watching streaming video, movies etc., but not for normal monitor use 'cos the text is not particularly clear. I have to run the PC at 1024x768 at 60Hz. Anything higher won't work.

Yeap Barco were quite common around where I was in Holland at the time..

Also Ampro had the 9500LC 9 inch gun system, weighted about as much as a volkswagon stuck on the ceiling above year head !! I once saw a stacked Sony G90 system, probably 90k USD worth of equipment and hugely temperamental for warmup, setup, burn in, tube maintenance, etc.. Still truly superb image that digital projectors have a tough time matching even now.

These days these things are almost thrown away, no one can handle the workload.. Like vinyl records in an MP3 world !!
