THE TAJ Exotica is still planned for Phuket, despite the world economic downturn and a terrorist attack at the beautiful Taj hotel in Mumbai in November.

Hotel representatives called a meeting today at the Bang Kontree Mosque community centre in Rawai to assess progress and inform interested parties about plans for the development.

As several glossy property-related magazines have noted, the Taj will probably set new standards in exclusive luxury accommodation on Phuket.

The Taj is to go on Koh Lon, an as yet undeveloped island surprisingly close to Chalong.

The 121 villas, to be set across 136 rai, could reach new record highs at a cost of $900,000 a key, according to those who have seen details of planning. That will be sumptuous accommodation.

But first, all the regular environmental impact surveys and discussions with local people have to be negotiated.

The hotel development project on Lone Island, under the name Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, arranged a public forum for stakeholders, related organizations and local villagers. The session took place on Wednesday at a public pavilion at Ban Bang Kontee and was participated by about 60 people. The firm representative explained that they had a plan to develop 121 units of resort accommodation on 136 rai of land on Lone Island, just 10 minutes boat ride from Chalong pier. It needs to carry out an environmental impact assessment and open for a public hearing toward the new development. Attending the public session, Nalinee Thongtham, a marine biologist from the Phuket Marine Biological Centre, said she needs to see the preventive measures of the firm to prevent dirt and rock from the project affecting the ocean or coast line. She states that Lone island has about 2-3 beautiful beaches with some coral reef areas. She is concerned that in the long term if tourist boats get in, she is not sure if it would damage or affect coral reefs. Nalinee also voiced her concern about waste water management. The project is however is still in the first stage and needs to be considered by a provincial committee on coastal construction.

What and how exactly is that a 'new record high'? For that island it wouldn't be hard, for Phuket it is not.

Sell the dream, sell the dream.
