Chiang Mai to become poverty-free zone

BANGKOK, Jan 12 (TNA) – Thailand’s Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has promised to make his home town--Chiang Mai--a poverty-free zone under his government’s people-centred policy.

The country's northern resort province of Chiang Mai should be one of the first provincial areas to be free of poverty, with government support, the premier said.

“Provincial district offices will be centres for the government's rural development schemes, and centres to help rural residents in their fight against poverty and ignorance,” he said.

The government will speed up the people-centred process, he said, giving a voice to rural residents so that local government officials can accurately serve their needs.

Meanwhile, Chiang Mai Governor Suwat Tantipat gave the prime minister donations of more than six million baht to help survivors and their families in the country’s six southern provinces--Phuket, Phang-nga, Krabi, Trang, Ranon and Satun--hit by massive tsunamis two weeks ago.

Ask him what Poverty-free means.... I'll bet a million baht it'll come down to more bullshit at election time.

When a bunch of these folks registered as 'poor' last year, once the deadline ended, Thaksin proclaimed that these were ALL the poor people... And, after giving them the proper individual referrals by 'counselors', they would no longer be considered 'poor', and the government can claim victory over poverty... :o
