sabaijai
I collected this news item in November. Does anyone know what the outcome of this hearing was, or where I might find out? Copyright 2004 Financial Times Information All rights reserved Global News Wire - Asia Africa Intelligence Wire Copyright 2004 Thai Press Reports Thai Press Reports November 23, 2004 LENGTH: 157 words HEADLINE: MEASURES MULLED TO RESCUE PHI PHI ISLAND FROM ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE BODY: Section: General News - Drastic measures urgently needed to stave off environmental degradation. The land-use planning agency will tomorrow hold the first public hearing on a draft of the Phi Phi Islands Community Specific Plan, which is an effort to create an urgent mechanism to rehabilitate the island. The Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning said last week that an analysis of the Tourism Penetration Index, reflecting the tourism life-cycle evolution of the Phi Phi Islands over the past three decades, showed that the islands would soon be undermined by mass tourism. "Phi Phi tourism will definitely reach the stagnation and decline stage with a sharp drop in the number of visitors if natural resources and environmental problems continue to mount, unless there are urgent effective measures to tackle the causes of disruption," said Prajim Krairasmi, the specific land-use planning expert. snoophound
Hopefuly they will introduce some town planning principals sensitive to the beauty and iniqueness of the area. Also a good chance to clean up and keep in clean. Its depressing to go to the other islands with their pristine water, and awesome cliffs etc, only to get off the boat and see piles of rotting rubbish just beyond the shoreline. I remember Phi Phi when i first saw it fifteen years ago.Stunning.Hope they don't go down the road of over development again. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
