When applying for a UK settlement visa which documents should be translated from Thai to English?

It does say on the supporting document checklist that ‘ not all documents need to be translated’. I take this to mean that some do…….but which ones??

Can anybody with direct experience help me out?

For the visa application there is no need to have any of the documents translated as the embassy has Thai staff who can translate them for the ECO if necessary.

However, I would recommend getting translations of:-

Her birth certificate.

If she has children and they are applying too, then their birth certificates and the sole custody documents.

If she has ever changed her name then the name change certificate.

Divorce/death certificate of previous spouse, if she had one.

Your marriage certificate.

This is because some or all of them will be useful or even essential once she is in the UK. Getting the translations done in Thailand will be a lot cheaper than getting them done in the UK, and if you have them you may as well submit them with the visa application.

I hope her mum has her birth certificate at her home.....we'll have to get her to dig it out.

Regarding the name change - she changed her name on her ID card the day we got married.......not sure if we have a record of that......is that going to be necessary?

No, if she changed her name due to her marriage then the marriage certificate will take care of that.

We had to get the thai marridge certificate translated...you will find as soon as you come out of the embassy touts approach you and then walk you over to an office where they translate for you. I think it was 800 baht.

hi. did u not need her birth certificate when u got married, and when u applied for marriage visa. i am assuming that in uk she has been living in uk for two years as i thought this was required before applying for settlement visa and this is usually done at the home office in uk as required. and documents would not need to be translated as should be related to living in england for two years previous. am i wrong ????

The OP and his wife are still in Thailand and applying for the initial 2 year spouse visa.
