Siam Pargagon, Central stores, Zen gold shops in Yaowaraj closed

BANGKOK: -- Siam Paragon shopping mall, five branches of Central Department stores and Zen announced they would be closed until Wednesday.

The four Central branches are Central Chidlom, Central Lard Prao, Central Pinklao and Central Silom Complex.

Gold shops in Yaowaraj were also closed.

Well it is Songkran. Maybe they went on holiday.

Paragon and Discovery were still closed at 12, but MBK is open as usual, with just a few gold shops closed within. Cinemas open but nothing worth watching

Plenty of tourists about, mostly gravitating towards MBK, no sign of any of the troubles of the previous day outside Paragon apart from the crowd-control railings across the store entrances.

Some malls close on riots

BANGKOK: -- Siam Paragon and and five shopping malls of Central Group have decided to close business on April 13 as the government started the crackdown on protesters.

Located in downtown, all the shopping malls - including CentralWorld Plaza, and Central shopping centres in Chidlom and Lat Phrao - were concerned over possible damage.

They said the malls will closely monitor the situation and make a decision on daily basis.

Meanwhile, gold shops in Yaowarat also decided to shut their doors during April 13 and April 15.

Tesco Lotus has vowed to operate as usual despite the chaos that rampage the inner Bangkok areas, for fear of hoarding during the Songkran festival.

Dr. Darmp Sukontasap, Senior Vice President, Tesco Lotus, said in a statement "We made the decision to maintain our normal business operation throughout the Songkran holiday period. We recognized that our job is to provide service to the public and we should do our best to fulfil that responsibility. The situation that we do not want to see is a shortage of food and necessary household items for families during this difficult period. Consumers would suffer even more if there were hoarding or price speculation as a result of political unrests.

"In the meantime, we have allowed flexibility for our staff to be absent from work if they have concerns over their safety or that of their families. Security around our stores have also been tightened for the safety of our customers and staff."

He also noted that like everyone else, Tesco Lotus hopes that normalcy would soon be restored so that we can all concentrate on efforts to revive the economy and increase Thailand's competitiveness in the global arena.

No, Siam Paragon hasn't really opened yet, but Emporium Stadium at Sukhumvit 35 is having a huge sale May 7 - 20, all stuff from Rajaprasong precinct up to 80% off.
