German Car Dl Allows Moped & Motor Scooter Usage - Applying For Thai Dl Allows Motorbike Usage?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

here in Germany you are also allowed to drive mopeds and motor-scooters with your car Drivers License.

I heard that you can also drive or rent a motorbike with your foreign DL when your allowed to drive scooters, because for Thais it is the same. If you can drive a scooter you can also drive a motorbike is what they say.

Now I am wondering if I have to have a real motorbike DL for also driving it with my Thai DL when I am applying or do they also not really care?

OK there are 2 driving licences her in Thailand, car and motorcycle. you need both. if you have a foreign DL then you can drive here for up to a year (if you have an International licence then its very easy getting a thai licence) see the top of the forum for a stickied thread.

I assume you are referring to the Thai car drivers licence. I don't think they will give you a Thai motorcycle licence on the basis of a foreign or international driver's licence, whether it allows you to drive a motorcycle or not, but I am not sure of that. All I know is that it seems a lot more difficult to get a Thai motorcycle licence than one for driving a car. I hope to get one soon, but will have to go through all the tests at the centre.

I can confirm that there are two licenses required in Thailand. I applied and got a car and motor cycle license on the basis of my UK driving license. I took the necessary documentation to the centre, you will find details in the pinned topic. The only tests that I had to take were for eyesight, no driving involved for either the car or motorcycle. The whole thing took about 2 hours.

I have since got the 5 year license when my 1 year license expired, without any test at all.

I hope that this helps.

Cheers, Rick.

If your licence or international shows motorcycle then you will get it.

I got both (car and motorcycle) without a problem, as my Internatioal DL also showed car and motorbike (scooter though).

That was 3 yrs ago or so.

Hi.

The German one can be used for maximum 50cc and 40/45/50/60 km/h mopeds/scooters (depending on the year the moped/scooter was made).

You will find that here in Thailand even those "mopeds" have 100 or more cc and go 80+ km/h. Hence you'd require a German "A1" license at least to qualify. And after an accident the insurance will tell you exactly that.

So better don't risk it.

Kind regards....

Thanh
